Planning Your Installation

We recommend that you install Remote Management from the ZENworks for Servers 3 program CD. However, if you need to copy the CD structure to a hard drive, the path between the root of the hard drive and the first CD directory can contain only directory names that conform to the 8.3-character DOS file naming convention. If any long directory names exist in the path, the installation program will not work.

Before you can install ZfS 3 Remote Management, you must perform the following tasks:

• Determining and Preparing the Managed Server
• Determining and Preparing the Management Server
• Determining and Preparing the Management Console

Determining and Preparing the Managed Server

After determining which servers you want to remotely manage, you must perform the following tasks:

• Make sure that you have uninstalled any third-party remote management agent or remote management application running on the managed server before installing the ZfS 3 Remote Management Agent.
• Make sure that you have uninstalled the Remote Management component that ships with the NetWare client, if installed.
• On a NetWare 4.2 server, do the following:
  • Make sure that TCP/IP is configured.
  • Edit the AUTOEXEC.NCF file to add the following entry:

    SET DSTRACE = LIMBER IP ON

• If you want to set up a secure Remote Management for Windows NT/2000 servers through using the Server Remote Management policy, make sure that you have installed the Subscriber on the managed servers. To install the Subscriber, see Installing Policy and Distribution Services on NetWare and Windows Servers .

  IMPORTANT:  For Windows servers, the server's DNS short name must be the same as the server's name. Either rename Windows servers where the server's name does not match its DNS short name before running the installation, or do not select these servers for installing Remote Management.

Determining and Preparing the Management Server

After determining the Management Server, you must perform the following tasks:

• If you will be installing on a NetWare server, you need to unload JAVA.NLM (at the server console, type java -exit). Make sure you do this when Java* is not being used by another process and make sure that the correct Java components have already been installed.
• If you want to set up a secure Remote Management session for Windows NT/2000 servers through using the Server Remote Management policy, make sure that you have installed the Distributor on the Management server. To install the Distributor, see Installing Policy and Distribution Services on NetWare and Windows Servers .

Determining and Preparing the Management Console

You can install ConsoleOne on a local machine or a server. "Local machine" refers to either the Windows 95/98 workstation or the Windows NT/2000 server you are using to perform the installation.

We recommend a Windows NT/2000 workstation or server as the best location for running ConsoleOne to administer ZfS 3 Remote Management.

If you are running ConsoleOne on Windows 95/98 workstation, you cannot install ZfS 3 Remote Management ConsoleOne snap-ins on the workstation from the ZfS 3 installation program. You must install ZfS 3 Remote Management ConsoleOne snap-ins on a NetWare server or a Windows NT/2000 machine and manually copy the ConsoleOne directory to the Windows 95/98 workstation.

If you want to install the ZfS 3 Remote Management ConsoleOne snap-ins to a NetWare or a Windows server, you must map a drive to that server and run its instance of ConsoleOne from a workstation. You cannot administer ZfS 3 Remote Management directly on the NetWare server by running ConsoleOne from the server's GUI interface.
