Scenario 1: Installing ZfD 4 in a ZfS 3 Environment
In this scenario, all the Inventory servers in your Inventory tree have only ZfS 3 installed. This scenario is illustrated in the following figure.
You can install ZfD 4 on ZfS 3 using either of two methods.
Method 1:
Upgrade all ZfS 3 Inventory servers to ZfS 3 SP1. For more information, see the ZfS 3 SP1 Readme.
Install ZfD 4 on all the ZfS 3 SP1 Inventory servers in a top-down deployment method. Always begin the installation at the topmost level Inventory server and proceed with the next lower-level Inventory servers. In the sample scenario, install ZfD 4 first on the Root Server and then on the Leaf Servers. For more information, see the Installation guide in the ZENworks for Desktops 4 documentation Web site.

Method 2:
Upgrade the Root Server to ZfS 3 SP1. For more information, see the ZfS 3 SP1 Readme.
Add another Leaf server with ZfD 4 installed, and configure it to roll up to the Root Server. For more information, see the Installation guide in the ZENworks for Desktops 4 documentation Web site.
Upgrade ZfS 3 lower-level Inventory servers to ZfS 3 SP1 because a ZfS 3 Inventory server cannot roll up to an Inventory server having ZfS 3 SP1 and ZfD 4 installed. For more information, see the ZfS 3 SP1 Readme.
The ZfS 3 SP1 Leaf Server will receive the .STR files from the inventoried servers attached to it and the ZfD 4 Leaf Servers will receive the .STR files from the inventoried workstations attached to them. The ZfS 3 SP1 and the ZfD 4 Leaf Servers will roll-up the inventory information to the Root Server.

Scenario 2: Installing ZfS 3 SP1 in a ZfD 4 Environment
In this scenario, all the Inventory servers in your Inventory tree have only ZfD 4 installed. This scenario is illustrated in the following figure.
You can install ZfS 3 SP1 on ZfD 4 using either of two methods.

Install ZfS 3 and ZfS 3 SP1 on all the ZfD 4 Inventory servers in a top-down deployment method. Add another Leaf Server with ZfS 3 and ZfS 3 SP1 installed, and configure the Leaf Server to roll up to the Root Server.
The ZfS 3 SP1 Leaf Server will receive the .STR files from the inventoried servers attached to it and the ZfD 4 Leaf Servers will receive the .STR files from the inventoried workstations attached to them. The ZfS 3 SP1 and the ZfD 4 Leaf Servers will roll-up the inventory information to the Root Server.

Scenario 3: Rolling Up Inventory Across Trees
In this scenario, there are two eDirectory trees: T1 and T2. ZfS 3 is installed on T1 and ZfD 3.x is installed and T2. The Inventory trees in T1 and T2 must be merged to have one Root Server to receive both server and workstation inventory information.
This scenario is illustrated in the following figure.
T1 and T2 can be merged using either of two methods:
Change the role of the Root Server in T2 to Intermediate Server with Database and configure it to roll up to the Root Server in T1. For more information, see Workstation Inventory Administration guide in the ZENworks for Desktops 4 documentation Web site.
Apply the ZfD 3.x Authentication patch on the Leaf Servers in T2. For more information on how to apply the ZfD 3.x Authentication patch, see the Upgrade guide in the ZENworks for Desktops 4 documentation Web site.

Merge Method 2
You can use the following general steps to merge the inventory data in T1 with the inventory data in T2:
