Bracknell, UK — March 27, 2002 — Novell, Inc., the leading provider of Net business solutions, today announced that top UK law firm Stephenson Harwood has deployed the Novell Secure Access™ solution to allow lawyers to securely and easily access network resources irrespective of location via a Web browser. The security infrastructure supports Stephenson Harwood's existing technology and delivers an added layer of protection to network resources. In addition, Novell® Portal Services was instituted to deliver confidential client information and complex legal data to lawyers and clients through a personalized, easy-to-manage user interface.

The launch of the eBusiness security infrastructure and portal, which was implemented by Novell Business Expert Associated Network Solutions (ANS), authenticates and authorizes users via any Web browser and then delivers personalized applications and information flawlessly across all networks as one Net. Stephenson Harwood has started rolling out the portal services to key clients and third parties and plans to extend the portal to targeted clients as demanded.

Novell Secure Access and Novell Portal Services were chosen by Stephenson Harwood based on the security and remote access features the solutions offered. The Novell Secure Access solution, which combines Novell eDirectory™, Novell iChain® 2.0 and ActivCard* technologies, provides the firm with a strong security infrastructure that grants different levels of access to users based on their identity. In addition, Stephenson Harwood was able to integrate the portal solution easily with its existing technology and a range of operating systems to provide lawyers with tailored access to confidential client information and complex statutes and case law from any location at anytime.

"Our lawyers are finding it much easier to access the information they need quickly, and we expect to see considerable improvements in productivity by giving our staff the ability to access the information they need to do their jobs even when they are away from the office," says Chris Petrie, IT director for Stephenson Harwood. "Novell Portal Services has put us way ahead of schedule, and we have modified our future IT plans because of the possibilities made available through the portal."

Stephenson Harwood has extended portal services to key clients and is now in a position to provide profiled access to barristers, banking and security experts, and collaborating law firms at extremely short notice. As demanded, the portal will be available to additional targeted clients and third-party groups. The firm believes that the portal will enable it to improve communication and interaction with clients by delivering customized, up-to-date information with stringent Internet security measures in tact.

"The dynamic nature of law, and complexity and confidentiality of client information requires legal firms to have a one Net environment that provides seamless access to business-critical information without jeopardizing security," said Peter Joseph, Novell's director of corporate strategy for EMEA. "Novell and ANS have developed customized security infrastructures and unique portal solutions for a range of legal institutions that deliver easy-to-use, tailored information and provide strong security based on the identity and profile of each customer."

Stephenson Harwood's access and security and portal solutions draw upon Novell eDirectory, Novell iChain, Novell BorderManager®, Novell DirXML™, Novell OnDemand Services™, Novell Portal Services and ActivCard technology to securely deliver applications to users via an Internet browser client. Novell eDirectory provides users with a single unique identity, whether they are logging on the office network or working remotely. Secure access for users is managed by Novell iChain and ActivCard, providing multi-level authentication that requires a single user name and password.
