Novell Streamlines IBM Host-To-Lan Printing

NetWare HostPrint/400 and NetWare HostPrint 1.11 Simplify Administration, Reduce Network Traffic Associated with Host-to-LAN Printing

SUNNYVALE, CA--February 27, 1995--Novell, Inc. today announced NetWare HostPrint/400 and NetWare HostPrint 1.11, two software products that address customer requirements for the printing of IBM AS/400- and mainframe-based output to NetWare printers. These new products help customers reduce the complexity in administering networks, while leveraging their existing investments in NetWare networks, IBM host systems, and AS/400 computers.

"The introduction of NetWare HostPrint/400 and NetWare HostPrint 1.11 products help our customers leverage their investments in networking printers, lower their overall cost of operation, while increasing flexibility and security," said Steve Markman, executive vice president and general manager of Novell's Information Access and Management Group.

According to Mark Larsen, administrator, systems integration, Northern States Power, Eau Claire, WI, "We have 26 sites that needed printing services from NetWare, IBM AS/400 computers and an IBM System 370 mainframe, so we integrated all printing under the NetWare umbrella to make it easier for users. NetWare HostPrint/400 and NetWare HostPrint 1.11 have saved us money, and greatly reduced administration time."

NetWare HostPrint/400 performs AS/400 print redirection and emulation on a NetWare for SAA server. NetWare HostPrint/400 allows users to send AS/400 print jobs directly to NetWare print queues, reducing network traffic and freeing up valuable resources on desktop workstations. By offloading the AS/400 print function to a NetWare for SAA 2.0 server, NetWare HostPrint/400 simplifies administration, conserves AS/400 resources and improves print performance.

NetWare HostPrint has been shipping since 1992, and is popular among users because it seamlessly integrates IBM mainframe and NetWare printing environments, helping customers leverage their investments in NetWare networks and IBM host systems. The enhanced NetWare HostPrint 1.11 runs on NetWare for SAA 2.0 (Please refer to the NetWare for SAA 2.0 news release) and supports up to 256 sessions--twice as many sessions as previous versions. Also, NetWare for HostPrint 1.11 can be configured using the new MS Windows-based NetWare for SAA 2.0 Administrator and managed using the NetWare for SAA Services Manager application for ManageWise.
