Novell Announces Common Desktop Environment (CDE) 1.0 Solution For UnixWare 2 Customers

Novell Teams with TriTeal to Deliver Industry-Standard "Look and Feel"

UNIFORUM, DALLAS -- March 14, 1995 -- Novell, Inc. today announced a Common Desktop Environment (CDE) 1.0 product for UnixWare 2, Novell's general purpose applications server for business-critical and database applications. Novell has entered into an agreement with TriTeal Corporation of Carlsbad, California, to provide a Novell Certified CDE 1.0 product, named TED for UnixWare 2, based on the TriTeal Enterprise Desktop (TED) software.

TriTeal Enterprise Desktop is a CDE graphical user environment which provides a standard graphical user interface (GUI) for UNIX-based computers. Because CDE technology is supported by most major UNIX vendors, it offers customers flexibility to choose systems without losing GUI consistency. CDE greatly enhances the ability of independent software vendors to economically develop multi-platform applications.

TED for UnixWare 2 is designed to provide a smooth migration path from the UnixWare desktop to CDE. UnixWare customers developing and deploying applications using the UnixWare desktop can take advantage of this to migrate to CDE at their own pace. TED for UnixWare 2 incorporates CDE technologies jointly developed by Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Novell, and SunSoft, allowing developers to continue to exploit the unique functions that will be found in each vendor's underlying operating and computer systems.

"This is a great opportunity for UnixWare customers who need to develop and deploy multi-platform applications on UNIX workstations," said Don McGovern, vice president of Novell's UNIX Systems Group. "Customers with large, enterprise computing environments can realize significant cost savings with a CDE version of UnixWare by reducing user training and simplifying the integration of new systems with existing heterogeneous environments."

Rand Schulman, vice president of marketing for TriTeal, said, "This announcement with Novell complements the TED endorsements by IBM and Hewlett-Packard. TriTeal has a great deal of proven desktop technology and experience in bringing cross-platform consistency to heterogeneous computing environments. Together, Novell and TriTeal can increase user productivity in enterprise-wide-networks with a rich, industry-standard graphical environment."

Learnix Limited, a beta test site for UnixWare 2, is one of the leading Open Systems training companies in North America, training hundreds of students each week. Senior instructor Andy Barclay said, "We use UnixWare 2 almost exclusively on our PCs and find that it integrates really well with our other UNIX systems. Novell's commitment to CDE for UnixWare means our students will be able to move between platforms faster and easier, further increasing the integration. We're anxious to deploy CDE throughout our 10 locations, in both local and wide area UnixWare environments."

TED for UnixWare 2 will be marketed by TriTeal and will be available by July 1995 for a suggested retail price of US$425. For more information on pricing, availability, or localized versions, contact TriTeal at 1-800-755-8325.
