Novell Launches NetWare For DEC Access
Integrates NetWare, DEC Networks using Standard Telnet
Clients
Sunnyvale, CA -- April 17, 1995 --To help users reduce the
complexity in their heterogeneous enterprise networks, Novell, Inc. today
announced NetWare for DEC Access software. The product integrates
NetWare networks, using IPX (Internet Packet Exchange) and TCP/IP with
Digital Equipment Corporation networks, offering users a single and
transparent point of access to both Internet and DEC resources.
Supported capabilities include terminal access, bidirectional printing, file
transfer and other networking services. NetWare for DEC Access also
supports Novell's directory services to provide a single login capability,
and offers an additional firewall layer to safeguard the network against
unauthorized users.
The new software is an updated version of NetWare for LAT, the
existing server-based NetWare-to-DEC host connectivitiy product that
allows NetWare customers to simultaneously and transparently access
DEC and NetWare services from any desktop, anywhere on the network.
"Many large enterprise networks have critical data on DEC systems that
must be integrated with new client/server NetWare networks," said
Steve Markman, executive vice president and general manager at
Novell's Information Access and Management Group. "NetWare for DEC
Access provides these organizations with the level of integration they
need, while allowing them to preserve the investments already spent in
their existing network infrastructure."
"It wouldn't be feasible to load TCP/IP onto all of our VAX
computer systems, but using NetWare for DEC Access will allow us to
get to the information we need without any extra software running on a
VAX or PC/workstation," said Jim Baird, communications manager at
Black& Veatch, a global engineering and construction firm based in
Kansas City. Black& Veatch has more than 100 VAX and MicroVAX
computers deployed throughout the organization that perform vital
communications for the company.
Transparent Telnet Client Access
NetWare for DEC Access supports the industry's leading TCP/IP
Telnet client emulators--including Novell's LAN WorkPlace and UnixWare
software--regardless of network operating system. No additional
software or costly hardware is required on a user's PC/workstation to
provide the terminal emulation function. In addition, NetWare for DEC
Access can be loaded on the same server running Novell's NetWare for
SAA enterprise solution to further streamline network complexity,
improve performance and reliability, and minimize network equipment
costs. NetWare for DEC Access supports up to 128 concurrent users.
Security Firewall Protection
NetWare for DEC Access is equipped with a security firewall to
provide a single point for network administrators to control, monitor and
audit Telnet sessions from the Internet to any DEC computer in the
network. Additional security features include audit trail and trace
functions to monitor network traffic; a comprehensive status display for
monitoring the performance of NetWare for DEC Access in real time; and
a menu-driven configuration utility to help ease the process of
authorizing users on the network.
Single Login Capability
NetWare for DEC Access is tightly integrated with Novell's
NetWare Directory Services (NDS) so that a single login can authenticate
users and authorize access to any NetWare server or DEC system on
the network. Additionally, network administrators can configure
NetWare for DEC Access to restrict access to a specified group of
network users.
Pricing and Availability
NetWare for DEC Access, including runtime versions of NetWare
4.1 and 3.12, is shipping in May 1995 through Novell resellers. The
suggested list price ranges from (U.S.) $1,095 to $9,495. NetWare for DEC Access is available in 8-, 16-, 32-, 64-, and 128-user configurations. NetWare for DEC Access supports an additive licensing approach that is based on concurrent user access to provide a flexible and scalable upgrade path. Upgrade packages are available for users of the existing NetWare for LAT offering. For pricing and information outside the U.S. And Canada, customers should contact their local Novell Authorized Reseller.
