Novell Announces NetWare-UNIX Printing Solution For NetWare 4.1
NetWare UNIX Print Services --NetWare 4 Edition Consolidates
NetWare and UNIX Printers, Reduces Cost and Complexity
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- April 11, 1995 --Novell Inc. today announced
NetWare UNIX Print Services 2.1 --NetWare 4 Edition, a bi-directional printing solution that gives both NetWare and UNIX clients access to a common set of printers and print services. NetWare UNIX Print Services eliminates the need to
deploy separate printers for each environment, saving customers money
and reducing administrative overhead.
NetWare UNIX Print Services is implemented as a set of NetWare
Loadable Modules (NLMs) and is installed and centrally managed on
NetWare 4.1 servers. The product delivers cost-effective printer sharing
capabilities without requiring any additional hardware or software on
servers or clients. UNIX users can spool their print jobs to any NetWare
printer via native lpr commands, while NetWare users can print to
UNIX-attached printers using their familiar command sets. Additional
features include File Transfer Protocol (FTP) software and remote
NetWare server management capabilities via Novell's XCONSOLE utility.
"For customers with mixed NetWare and UNIX environments, NetWare
UNIX Print Services offers an easy-to-use, cost-effective way to blend
all printer resources into a single, cohesive network," said Steve Tucker,
vice president and general manager of Novell's Advanced Access
Applications Division. "This is consistent with Novell's commitment to
give customers seamless access to the systems and data they need to
do their jobs in the most efficient way."
Features and Benefits
NetWare UNIX Print Services 2.1 offers users the following key features
and benefits:
- Printer sharing --NetWare UNIX Print Services is a bi-directional printing
solution that provides cost-effective print sharing services for NetWare
and UNIX users. This reduces costs in network printing by eliminating
the need for separate NetWare and UNIX printers. This is particularly
important for companies that have expensive specialized printers or
plotters.
- File transfer between UNIX and NetWare --The integrated FTP server NLM enables a UNIX client to transfer files to or from a NetWare server.
As a result, any user (UNIX or otherwise) with FTP client software can
quickly and easily send files directly to a NetWare user without using
slower or less convenient methods.
- Remote NetWare server management -- Novell's XCONSOLE utility lets network managers remotely administer NetWare servers from any
VT100, VT220 or X Window system.
Pricing and Availability
NetWare UNIX Print Services 2.1 - NetWare 4 Edition will be available
mid-April 1995 through Novell reseller channels. Suggested list pricing is
US$995 per server license.
