Press Release

Novell Ships AppWare 1.2

Now Available Through Retail And Mail Order Sales Channels

PROVO, Utah--April 18, 1995--Novell, Inc. today announced that AppWare 1.2 is now shipping. Novell also announced expanded distribution for AppWare 1.2, making the product available through retail and mail order sales channels in addition to Novell's traditional reseller channel. AppWare is Novell's high-level programming tool for rapid application development using pre-written, reusable software components called AppWare Loadable Modules (ALMs).

AppWare 1.2 includes new functionality and enhancements, and adds new third-party ALMs. And for a limited time, AppWare 1.2 is being offered at a reduced price, making the product more affordable.

"There are a large number of corporate developers, network administrators, and IS managers who need to create cross-platform network applications and utilities to make their jobs easier," said Ed Firmage, director of marketing for Novell's NetWare Development Tools Group. "AppWare allows these customers to quickly and easily develop these applications and utilities. And by providing AppWare in the retail and mail order sales channels at a reduced price, Novell is making it easier to purchase the product."

According to Rick Haigis, vice president of marketing at The Programmer's Shop, demand for AppWare 1.2 should be high. "Our mail order customers include MIS managers, network administrators, system integrators and consultants in addition to the 'traditional' programmer. These customers are looking for a high-level programming tool to easily develop custom applications and utilities to make their computing environments easier to use and manage."

New Features

AppWare 1.2's application editor now includes a "single step" debugging capability. The new feature allows customers to single step from any break point while executing an application. This speeds the debugging process and makes it easier to debug an application.

AppWare 1.2 also includes enhancements and adds new functions to many of the ALMs that ship with the product. New functionality has been added to the Application, Button, Date, Database, File, File Operations, General, List, Page Layout, Table, Text, Time and Window ALMs.

New ALMs

AppWare 1.2 includes new ALMs from Reach Software and Wall Data. Reach Software's WorkMAN for AppWare provides three ALM objects (Workflow, Stage, and Link) and a number of functions that enhance the capability of customers using AppWare to build workflow-enabled applications. All the objects and functions can be incorporated seamlessly into AppWare applications. The AppWare environment also gives developers the flexibility to easily add their own logic to the process model.

Wall Data's RUMBA ALM makes it possible for AppWare applications to bring host data from IBM mainframe, AS/400, or Digital VAX computing environments to desktop PCs. The RUMBA ALM helps facilitate downsizing by allowing customers to develop applications that can use host data on desktop PCs.

Pricing and Availability

To speed installation for both Macintosh and MS Windows platforms, AppWare 1.2 is delivered on a single CD-ROM. The product is available now at a specially reduced price of $199 through August 1995. After August, the price will be $495 (Suggested U.S. List). In addition to being available through Novell's Authorized, Gold and Platinum Resellers, AppWare 1.2 is now available though retail and mail order sales channels such as The Programmer's Shop, Programmers Warehouse, and Mac Warehouse.
