PerfectOffice Wins Infoworld Suite Review

PerfectOffice outperforms both Microsoft Office and Lotus SmartSuite in all major industry reviews

OREM, Utah -- April 25, 1995 -- Novell, Inc.'s PerfectOffice suite outperformed Microsoft Office and Lotus SmartSuite to win InfoWorld's Software Suite review this week (issue dated April 24). The review concluded that "PerfectOffice has leapfrogged Microsoft Office Professional and Lotus SmartSuite to become the most tightly integrated office suite on the market." PerfectOffice received an overall score of 7.0, compared to 6.4 for Microsoft Office and 6.8 for Lotus SmartSuite.

The InfoWorld review states that "PerfectOffice does a better job of sharing information across applications or a workgroup and has a more consistent user interface." The review also points out strengths in network installation, task automation and data sharing.

"We focused on integration in PerfectOffice so users can get their work done without worrying about individual applications," said Glen Mella, vice president of marketing for Novell's Business Applications. "We wanted to help users work--whether alone or in groups--as efficiently and seamlessly as possible."

According to PC Data research (January 1995), PerfectOffice has gained 25 percent market share, outselling Lotus SmartSuite with 5 percent. PerfectOffice, as well as WordPerfect and Quattro Pro, continue to appear on best-seller lists of major distributors such as Merisel and Ingram.

Since its launch in January of this year, PerfectOffice has consistently been named the best Windows suite in industry reviews. PC Week gave PerfectOffice the only Analyst's Choice recommendation in a suite review in the January 16, 1995 issue. PC Magazine attested that PerfectOffice "leapfrogs the competition by placing its emphasis on tasks, not individual programs" in a First Look in the Feb. 21, 1995 issue. The January issue of PC World reported that PerfectOffice "offers the best integration yet, including a consistent interface, task automation, cross-application macros and scripts, and workgroup publishing." PC/Computing magazine listed it as the only suite on the "A-List" in the May 1995 issue.

WordPerfect 6.1, the flagship product in PerfectOffice, has also been rated the best word processor in all major word processing reviews including PC Magazine, PC/Computing, Windows Magazine, and Windows Sources.

Paradox 5.0 for Windows, part of PerfectOffice Professional, also won InfoWorld's Programmable Windows Database Roundup in the March 20 issue. Paradox received an overall score of 8.4, compared to a 7.8 score for Microsoft Access and 4.9 for Alpha Software Corporation's Alpha 5 for Windows.
