Novell Ships NetWare/IP 2.1 - NetWare 4 Edition Enhances TCP/IP Protocol Access For NetWare 4.1 Customers

Provo, Utah -- May 31, 1995 -- Continuing its commitment to provide protocol independence for its customers, Novell today announced the release of NetWare/IP 2.1 - NetWare 4 Edition for use with the NetWare 4.1 network operating system. NetWare/IP enables NetWare 4 networks to be seamlessly integrated into Transmission Control Protocol/Internetwork Protocol (TCP/IP) environments. NetWare/IP allows users to run the NetWare network operating system and its services over IP as an alternative or in addition to the Internetwork Package Exchange (IPX) transport protocol. Novell began shipping fulfillment orders to customers in April.

"NetWare/IP 2.1 has helped us exist in an IP environment," said Dave Lange, information consultant for the Forest Resources College of the University of Washington. "The new architecture is superior to the old IP tunneling technology. We're happy that Novell has recognized the demand customers have for protocol independence and has decided to bundle NetWare/IP with NetWare 4.1."

"Novell has the largest installed base of TCP/IP solutions in the market," said Toby Corey, vice president of Marketing for Novell's NetWare Products Division. "We recognize that our customers may want to run IP exclusively or in a mixed environment with IPX. Novell is committed to providing equal support for both protocols for every product that we ship. NetWare/IP 2.1 provides superior performance and integration with the NetWare 4.1 network operating system, and the fact that we're offering it free of charge shows our dedication to protocol independence."

Summary of Features

NetWare/IP v2.1 - NetWare 4 Edition includes the following features:

  • Support for NetWare Directory Services. The UNICON utility takes advantage of NDS authentication for administrative tasks without the need for bindery services.
  • Integration with NetWare 4.1. Provides a common install with the network operating system.
  • NIP191.EXE functionality. This update improves WAN performance and expands tunable performance paramaters, among other enhancements.
  • Online documentation. Both client and server documentation is provided in Dynatext form for electronic installation.
  • NetWare/IP gateway. Administrators can choose to enable or disable this feature which allows NetWare nodes running IPX to communicate with NetWare/IP nodes.
  • Preferred Domain Sap Servers. Users can specify either registered or unregistered DSS servers as their preferred server, which allows them to optimize WAN performance.
