UnixWare 2 To Run Steve Chen's High Performance Parallel Servers
Customers Gain Top Performing High-Volume OS Solution for
Enterprise Computing
SAN JOSE, CALIF.--June 19, 1995--Novell Inc. announced today
that UnixWare®2, the first application server designed to bring
business-critical computing to Novell networks, will ship on a new
generation of high performance symmetric multiprocessing (SMP)
servers from Chen Systems, Inc. this September. The powerful new
Chen Systems servers will incorporate multi-processor parallel
architecture and system management tools, which are essential for large
enterprises to run mission-critical application systems in a client-server
environment. In addition, Novell and Chen Systems will partner on
product development and marketing activities for this enterprise-strength
solution.
Dr. Steve S. Chen, president and chief architect of Chen
Systems, is well-known for his design of Cray supercomputers. Chen
said, "We chose UnixWare 2 because it provides the robust, scalable
and open operating system our customers want in a distributed/parallel
computing environment and because it supports our hardware
scalability. For those reasons, we also plan to work closely with Novell
to promote UnixWare 2 in the enterprise computing space. This
partnership will ultimately provide cohesive solutions for enterprise-wide
distributed and parallel processing within single system image clustered
computing environments."
As a result of this partnership between Novell and Chen
Systems, customers will gain an open enterprise computing platform with
an industry-leading operating system that delivers world-record absolute
price/performance and scalability -- as indicated by recent AIM and
TPC-C benchmarking results. Today's announcement provides further
evidence of the acceptance and endorsement of UnixWare 2 by
leading-edge client-server platform vendors.
"Our partnership with Chen Systems will evolve as Novell's future
operating system offerings continue to meet their product needs, from
small entry servers to very large enterprise server systems. We are
very pleased that UnixWare 2 is contributing a key element of Chen's
core technology," said Mike DeFazio, senior vice president of
development for Novell's Operating System Division.
In addition to partnering on marketing activities with Novell, Chen
Systems also will provide input to Novell's future OS offerings,
specifically in the areas of high performance modeling, measurement and
tuning, advanced software, and overall enterprise capability.
The new Chen Systems high performance parallel servers, which
are based on the Intel Pentium® microprocessor, can support up to eight
processors.
UnixWare 2 is the latest generation of UNIX System V technology,
a platform for popular commercial applications that has been evolving for
more than 20 years. This new version gives customers a powerful,
cost-effective system to meet their needs for high performance,
scalability, NetWare integration, ease of use and administration, and
broad applications support (more than 3,500 native and 15,000
UnixWare-compatible applications exist today).
