Novell Announces AppWare Support For Visual Basic Controls

New AppWare Loadable Module Opens AppWare Development Environment To Visual Basic Developers

PROVO, UT -- June 28, 1995 -- Novell's AppWare Division announced today the development of an AppWare Loadable Module (ALM) for Visual Basic Controls (VBXes). The VBX ALM provides interoperability between Visual Basic and AppWare. This fully-integrated and open development environment enables solutions providers and developers to quickly and efficiently build applications in AppWare.

"AppWare and Visual Basic interoperability achieved with the VBX ALM provides developers with a more open development environment that lets them utilize VBXes in the AppWare environment without having to rewrite any code," said Joe Firmage, vice president for strategic planning in Novell's NetWare Systems Group. "This integration reduces developers' costs in creating AppWare components and the time it takes to deliver AppWare-based solutions to the marketplace."

By using the VBX ALM developers can select components from the thousands of VBX libraries and drop them into their AppWare environment. Once the VBX controls are added to the project, developers can use them like any other visual component available in AppWare such as the text, table or button objects, broadening developers' ability to create standalone applications that address specific business needs.

"This move to develop AppWare support for VBX is another step in Novell's commitment to provide an open tool that enables developers to leverage our network services and make network application development easier and cost effective," said Ed Firmage, director of marketing for AppWare.

Designed for corporate developers, MIS, integrators, and others involved in building vertical and business-specific applications, AppWare is a high-level (5GL) component-based tool for developing Macintosh and MS Windows applications. AppWare's native components known as AppWare Loadable Modules or ALMs are "programmed" by linking them together visually on the screen, as in a flow chart. The resulting project is then compiled as a double-clickable application (.exe). The AppWare development tool is a key element in Novell's long-term, company-wide component software strategy; providing an infrastructure of tools and components that facilitate network application development.

Novell's VBX ALM will be released in August and made available at no charge through the following AppWare channels:

  • Compuserve: Go AppWare
  • Novell Bulletin Board Service (BBS): 801-221-5197
  • AppWare Internet Support: AW-Supt@Novell.com
  • AppWare Internet Mailing List: Appware-info@adeva.org
  • AppWare Home Page -WWW: http://www.novell.com/ServSupp/devsup/appware

In addition, the VBX ALM will be included with the next release of AppWare scheduled for late #95.
