Novell Inc. Becomes Core Founding Member in Salutation Consortium

Orem, UT -- July 13, 1995 -- Novell Inc. today announced its participation as a core founding member in the Salutation Consortium. The Salutation Consortium, consisting of 19 information technology companies, including manufacturers of computers, network services and office equipment, has been formed to produce an open specification for identifying and exchanging capability information among devices such as copiers, printers, fax machines and telephones.

Participation in the Consortium expands and complements the Novell Embedded Systems Technology (NEST) initiative to extend the NetWare network operating system to a broad range of office and consumer devices. Novell has actively participated in the formation of the Consortium and has contributed to the development of its architecture specification.

"Novell views the strategies of its Novell Embedded Systems Technology (NEST) program and of the Salutation Consortium as synergistic approaches in promoting interoperability amongst heterogenous devices," says Darl McBride, vice president and general manager of Novell's Extended Networks Division. The goal of the Salutation Consortium, to perpetuate access to information anytime, anywhere', is clearly in line with our goals for NEST. Several key NEST partners are members of the Consortium and are actively working together to bring fully integrated networked solutions to our targeted vertical markets."

Novell Extended Networks Division

The Extended Networks Division develops and delivers software solutions for extending access to the network beyond computers to non-traditional computing devices such as television set-top boxes, building controls and office automation equipment.

Its core product, the Novell Embedded Systems Technology (NEST) Software Developer's Kit (SDK), enables OEMs to embed the client component of NetWare in their hardware devices resulting in that device becoming a node on a NetWare network. Novell and third party developers will provide applications for those devices that help users access the network and its comprehensive services. More than 40 OEMs are working with Novell to include NEST capabilities in upcoming products, furthering the industry's drive toward Pervasive Computing.

The business of Novell is connecting people with other people and the information they need, enabling them to act on it anytime, anyplace. Novell is the world's leading network software provider. The company's products provide the distributed infrastructure, network services, advanced network access and network applications required to make networked information and pervasive computing an integral part of everyone's daily life.
