Novell Expands Directory Assistance Program To Meet Developer Demand

Solutions Integrated with NetWare Directory Services Save Developers Time and Effort, Help Network Administrators Reduce Cost of Network Ownership

PROVO, Utah--August 16, 1995--Novell today announced that to meet developer demand it is expanding the Novell Directory Assistance (NDA) program by tenfold, opening it to all interested vendors and scheduling developer "kitchens" through the end of 1996. Summer 1995 kitchens are already filled; developers can begin signing up for fall and winter kitchens immediately.

NDA is a cooperative development and marketing program designed to help vendors create and sell applications integrated with NetWare Directory Services (NDS), the global directory in Novell's NetWare 4.1. Novell has shipped 22,000 NetWare 4.1 Software Development Kits (SDKs) since January 1995--more than all NetWare SDKs shipped during the previous five years--which contain all the tools necessary to develop to NetWare Directory Services. The NDA program is for developers who want to take the next step and partner with Novell in developing and marketing their NDS-integrated solutions.

"The enormous interest we're seeing in the NDA program demonstrates the critical mass of support building for NetWare 4 and NetWare Directory Services," said Bill Mason, senior director of ISV Marketing and Strategic Developer Programs for Novell's Operating Systems Division. "Developers worldwide recognize the power and potential of NetWare Directory Services and are delivering NDS-integrated applications to their customers. NDS is quickly becoming the industry standard for network directories, and we are committed to helping both developers and our customers receive the full benefit of NDS-integrated solutions."

"NDA is one of many ways we're working closely with developers to help them deliver solid, quality solutions to the marketplace," said Gary Mueller, vice president of Novell's Corporate Developer Relations. "The program is a great example of how Novell and its developer partners are working together to meet the evolving requirements of networking customers."

The NDA pilot program, launched in the fall of 1994, accelerated the release of NDS-integrated solutions in key technology areas, including fax, backup, telephony, e-mail, security and network management. (See attachment for list of NDS-integrated solutions.) Companies attending upcoming developer kitchens include:

"NDS support makes our Air Apparent network paging solution easier for customers to use and administer," said Kim Spitznagel, director, Motorola PCSS Division. "Because NDS support was a key product requirement, being part of the NDA pilot program was an ideal way for us to help ease development and reach our customers. NDA is one of the best developer programs we've ever participated in, which is why we've signed up for additional kitchens."

"Supporting NDS is a key competitive requirement for our mail synchronization solution, SyncWare," said David Toth, vice president, Hitachi Network Products Group. "As NDS becomes pervasive, our customers need to know that we support the NetWare directory. Becoming part of NDA gives us access to development help and the opportunity to partner with Novell in communicating to our customers."

NDS Integration Benefits Developers, Users and Network Administrators

NetWare Directory Services turns a multiserver network into a single, integrated information system that is easier to access, easier to administer, and less expensive to own, operate and maintain. NDS and NDS-integrated applications benefit users, network administrators and developers in the following ways:

  • Users have a single login to all the resources on the network, regardless of their location.
  • Because applications are tied in to all network information stored in NDS, they are aware of all other resources on the network--users, groups, printers, telephone and fax numbers, other applications, and so on. This eliminates the need for developers to create a separate directory of information, saving them time, money and development effort. It also means they can build applications that leverage all information stored in the directory tree.
  • Network administrators benefit by having to administer only a single directory of network users and resources rather than multiple directories.
  • Applications can become part of the way that information is hierarchically organized and displayed in the NDS tree. Administrators can manage applications as they do any other network resource, using the NWADMIN graphical administration tool included in NetWare 4.1.

NDA Program Specifics

NDA has two components: developer kitchens and cooperative marketing opportunities. During the two-day kitchens, developers receive a comprehensive technical overview of NetWare Directory Services and hands-on help from Novell engineering staff in designing and building their NDS-aware applications. Once they've attended a kitchen, developers have the opportunity to partner with Novell in a variety of joint marketing activities, including road shows, trade shows, special advertising supplements, direct mailings, and more.

Space is available in the following 1995 kitchens: September 21-22; October 24-25; November 1-2. The cost for attending an NDA developer kitchen is $250 for the first person and $150 for each additional person

Developer kitchens in 1996 begin in February and will continue through the end of the year. To participate in NDA, developers must be part of the Novell Professional Developer program and part of the Novell's Yes program.
