Press Release

Novell and Oracle Expand Product Integration Efforts

Free Upgrades To Latest Releases of Oracle7 and NetWare 4 or UnixWare 2

PROVO, Utah --August 24, 1995-- Novell, Inc., and Oracle® Corporation today announced a new phase in their ongoing joint marketing and engineering efforts to further the integration of the companies' leading network operating systems and relational database products. Development efforts on both sides have resulted in continuing improvements in the NetWare®, UnixWare® and Oracle7 Workgroup Server and Enterprise Server products.

Two of the innovative areas where Novell and Oracle have concentrated product integration efforts are:

  • Oracle7 Enterprise Server support for NetWare Directory Services® (NDS) allows customers to more easily manage the database within the Directory through graphical administration utilities.
  • NetWare Symmetric Multiprocessing enhances the scalability of NetWare and industry-standard server hardware. Oracle will be the first third-party vendor to support NetWare SMP.
The new network operating system and database offerings from each company will now replace the OracleWare product line and those customers will be migrated to the more tightly-integrated products. To ensure that OracleWare customers receive current versions of the Oracle database system and choice of network operating systems from Novell, free upgrades to the latest release of Oracle7 Enterprise Server and either NetWare 4® or UnixWare 2 will be sent to registered customers.

According to Richard King, executive vice president and general manager of Novell's Systems Group, "Novell is very committed to a productive and evolving relationship with Oracle. As our mutual customers' requirements for world-class networked databases increase, we will work together to ensure that those needs are met. NetWare 4 and NDS, coupled with Oracle database products, are an ideal combination for our joint customers."

"Oracle's relationship with Novell has gone from strength to strength since the introduction of OracleWare. It successfully raised awareness that Oracle7 on NetWare or UnixWare was an available, powerful combination for users. Oracle has since moved forward in the client/server market with Workgroup/2000, offering solutions on NetWare at a lower price point than OracleWare, " said Nimish Mehta, vice president of Oracle's Workgroup Solutions Division. "Oracle is firmly committed to NetWare and UnixWare because of their technology strengths and market success. NetWare has become one of Oracle's premier platforms. One of the primary benefits from Oracle is true scalability from the desktop to the datacenter. Novell has an equally strong scalability story which makes the joint offering extremely powerful for users."
