Novell Extends Partnerships with Netscape and Spyglass
to Support Envoy Files on the Internet
Electronic Documents will be Easier to Share and Read
OREM, Utah -- September 20, 1995 -- Novell, Inc. today announced
strategic partnerships with Netscape Communications Corp. and
Spyglass® Inc. to make it easier for users to view electronic documents
on the World-Wide Web. Both companies will support the Envoy®
Viewer, Novell's portable document viewer, with their popular web
browsers. Netscape's Navigator 2.0® and Spyglass's Mosaic® will
support the Envoy file format so users of these popular web browsers
will be able to view Envoy files on the Internet. Files created with Envoy
are unique because they can be published without using the Hypertext
Markup Language (HTML), giving users another option for publishing
documents on the Internet.
The Envoy Viewer lets users view electronic information
regardless of the application or platform used to create it. Users can also
annotate, print, and import feedback from others in a workgroup
environment. The Envoy Viewer is currently available free of charge on
the Internet (http:\\wp.novell.com\elecpub\electoc.htm) and can be
distributed to any other user for no additional fees or royalties.
"Envoy compatibility with the leading web browsers makes it
even easier for users to publish their content on the rapidly expanding
World-Wide Web," said Glen Mella, vice president of marketing for Novell
Business Applications. "Web browser customers also get the benefit of
viewing richly formatted content without increased file size, a benefit
that sets Envoy apart from Adobe's Acrobat in providing a more
economical way to view content on the Internet."
Currently, the Envoy Viewer lets users create links to other areas
within a single document. The next version will let users link to multiple
documents, as well as to Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) on the
World-Wide Web.
"Novell's Envoy represents a strong addition to the Netscape
Navigator environment, enabling it to serve as a platform for the
exchange and presentation of information," said Mike Homer, vice
president of marketing at Netscape. "The portability of the Envoy format
ties in perfectly with Netscape's commitment to complete cross-platform
support."
"Novell's Envoy joins the ranks of other fine Spyglass Mosaic
Compatible Partners," said Marc Miller, executive vice president of
marketing and business development at Spyglass. "This is a testament to
our open technology. Our Software Developer's Interface allows Envoy
to work with Spyglass Mosaic easily and seamlessly--opening the door
for our customers to include Novell's Envoy in their product offerings."
Pricing and Availability
The Envoy Viewer is one component of Novell's complete Envoy
product which is developed by Novell and Tumbleweed Software
Corporation. The complete Envoy product also includes the Envoy
Publisher which lets users create and publish fully formatted documents
by simply choosing the Envoy printer driver. Envoy documents retain
formatting and are nearly one-third their original size when distributed.
The suggested retail price for the full Envoy product is $189 (US).
Envoy is also included in PerfectOffice, Novell's award-winning
suite of applications. The upcoming PerfectOffice for Windows 95 will
include the new version of Envoy that will be compatible with Netscape
and Spyglass web browser standards.
