Novell Announces Fourth Fiscal Quarter Earnings to be Below Expectations

Orem UT., -- October 6, 1995 -- Novell, Inc. (Nasdaq: NOVL) said today that due to continued weakness in the application segment of its software business the company expects earnings in its fourth fiscal quarter which ends October 28, 1995 to be below financial analyst projections. Management currently estimates earnings from operations for the quarter to be in the range of $0.15 to $0.18 per share.

Although fourth quarter revenue from its principal network software business is expected to reflect good year-over-year growth, the company does not expect this growth to make up completely for the decline in the applications segment of its business.

The company said preliminary indications based on the first two months of the quarter are that its WordPerfect family of personal productivity application products could decline more than $75 million from the $134 million contributed by applications the year before. In the fourth fiscal quarter 1994 applications accounted for 28 percent of Novell revenue. For the fourth quarter 1995 applications could decline to below 13 percent of company revenue.

Novell believes the anticipated fourth quarter weakness in its application business is primarily due to a continued falloff in the Windows 3.1 application market following the introduction of Microsoft's new Windows 95 operating system in August. Novell applications designed specifically for this new operating system are not available today but are expected to ship early in 1996.

Novell's statements about future anticipated results were based on internal estimates, which are subject to change, as they reflect preliminary information and management assumptions. They are not actual results. The Novell fourth fiscal quarter actual results are expected to be announced in early December.
