Novell's GroupWise Installed Base Surpasses Five Million

More Than Two Million GroupWise Licenses Sold In Past Year

OREM, Utah -- October 17, 1995 -- Novell, Inc. today announced that more than five million users have embraced its GroupWise groupware solution, giving GroupWise the largest installed base of groupware users worldwide. GroupWise, Novell's fastest growing product, has added more than 2 million users to its installed base in fiscal 1995, growing at an unprecedented 128 percent per annum. As the five millionth user of GroupWise, international copying and document services chain Kinko's Copy Centers, headquartered in Ventura, Calif., has plans to install the groupware solution at its 800 branch offices across the country.

"Our president and executive team use GroupWise daily, in the office, at home and on the road, to quickly send data to headquarters and to regional offices," said Dawn Graham, director of information services at Kinko's. "Eventually, GroupWise will be used to replace things we currently do on paper such as purchase orders, expense reports and human resource applications, saving the company both time and money."

According to a study completed by the International Data Corp. (IDC), a Framingham, Massachusetts-based market research firm, GroupWise holds the number one position in its market sector, with the largest installed base of users (19%).

"IDC believes that the focus on the groupware market is shifting from point products to products that integrate with enterprise applications on the one hand and desktop applications on the other. This is an area in which Novell, with its linkage between GroupWise, NetWare and PerfectOffice, may have a natural advantage," said John Gantz, senior analyst at IDC.

Novell's efforts to tightly integrate GroupWise with NetWare makes GroupWise the most cost-effective, groupware platform to buy, administer and maintain. NetWare users can leverage their investments not only in the network operating system, but also in a collaborative computing solution to increase user productivity while at the same time lowering the total cost of network ownership.

Groupware products are characterized by their ability to enable users to collaborate and communicate in their work. Customers like Domino's Pizza, Nordic Track and Nintendo especially like the Universal In Box in GroupWise, allowing users to receive all incoming and outgoing communication in one place. GroupWise remains the first and only enterprise-wide, cross-platform, groupware product to integrate E-mail, personal calendaring, group scheduling, voice mail, faxes, Internet messages, task management and information access into this single user environment.

"The rapid acceptance and proliferation of E-mail, voice mail, Internet access and computer faxing within the office have increased efficiencies, but caused an information overload," said Jeff Waxman, executive vice president, the Novell Applications Group. "To manage that overload organizations have installed GroupWise to serve as the central source for all communications. GroupWise is growing at 128 percent per annum because it immediately adds value by letting the user manage all critical information from a single desktop, while at the same time providing an out-of-box, intuitive, low-cost solution that rivals Lotus Notes, and surpasses Microsoft's Exchange which does not yet exist," added Waxman.

Novell's groupware products have also recently acquired a number of industry accolades. National Software Testing Laboratories awarded GroupWise a score of 8.5 (out of 10) in its ranking of Group Scheduling Programs for Windows, placing Novell ahead of Microsoft and Lotus. In its September 1995 issue, NetWare Solutions named Novell's GroupWise as the winner of its 1995 Readers' Choice Award in two categories: "Best Groupware and Telephony" and "Best E-mail."

In addition to being a standalone product, GroupWise is also a strategic component of Novell's PerfectOffice#, the industry's first network suite. GroupWise complements the collaboration tools found in PerfectOffice, making it the Perfect Place to Work and the obvious choice for small or large businesses entering the era of collaborative computing. GroupWise is also the perfect messaging partner to Novell's NetWare, the industry's dominant network operating system. With GroupWise and NetWare#, Novell eliminates the need to separately manage network and messaging systems, making NetWare the network that is ready for tomorrow, today.
