UNIX OUTPERFORMS NT IN ZIFF DAVIS SERVERBENCH TESTS
Customers Can Rely on UNIX for Top Performance and
Scalability on Industry-Standard Hardware
FLORHAM PARK, New Jersey --October 27, 1995--UnixWare; 2 and SCO OpenServer; Release 5, both leading business-critical application server operating systems, outperformed
Microsoft NT in ServerBench tests conducted recently by Ziff Davis
Labs. Conducted on a Compaq ProLiant 4000 with up to four Pentium/66 processors, these tests simulate a database application's activity, measuring the number of transactions between networked clients and servers -- based on a mix of processor, disk and network subsystem tests.
UnixWare 2 led the pack in performance and scalability with multiple processors (one to four), and also was top data cruncher -- turning in the best ServerBench scores by client load and number of processors. SCO OpenServer; Release 5 turned in the second best performance, also confirming the UNIX system as the clear winner against Microsoft NT in its ability to meet the business-critical computing needs of enterprise customers.
Running on industry-standard hardware, UnixWare 2's top performing score on the single processor includes a peak of 41 transactions per second (TPS) with an average score of 35 TPS across the full client range. SCO OpenServer Release 5 averaged 28 TPS. Windows NT and OS/2 followed, with 25 TPS and 20 TPS, respectively.
On September 20, Novell announced plans to sell its UNIX business to The Santa Cruz Operation, Inc., (SCO) and acquire a significant minority position in SCO. Effective on or about December 1,
SCO will market and sell UnixWare 2 and ship the general release of
UnixWare 2.1 mid year in 1996. SCO also will be merging the best features of its SCO OpenServer Release 5 with UnixWare 2 into one application server product expected to ship during 1997.
"We are extremely pleased that UnixWare 2 turned in such excellent scores in its first head-to-head performance competition against Windows NT,"stated Rick Bohdanowicz, vice president, product marketing, Novell's operating system division." "Enterprise customers seeking a truly superior and highly scalable application server should clearly consider the UNIX system as the proven solution for business-critical computing."
UnixWare 2 is the latest generation of UNIX System V technology, a platform for popular commercial applications that has been evolving for more than 20 years. As an application server platform designed for business-critical systems, this new version gives customers a powerful, cost-effective system to meet their needs for high performance, scalability, NetWare integration, ease of use and administration, and broad applications support (more than 3,500 native and 15,000
UnixWare-compatible applications exist today).
"The excellent performance and scalability of both SCO
OpenServer Release 5 and UnixWare clearly demonstrate two of the advantages that UNIX systems offer over competitive platforms. These, combined with the enormous base of business-critical applications and databases, clearly show UNIX system superiority in bringing enterprise level capabilities to business environments of all sizes, " noted Scott
McGregor, senior vice president, products, SCO.
SCO OpenServer Release 5 is the next-generation Business
Critical Server operating system for the Intel platform that protects customers' legacy investments in data, applications, networks, and hardware. Advanced reliability, availability, and scalability features are built-in, enabling businesses of all sizes to combine the power and security of large-scale systems with the exceptional price-performance value and flexibility of commodity server hardware based on Intel microprocessors.
