NetWare Web Server Offers a Fast, Easy Web Publishing Solution

l publishing.

NetWare Web Server is a complete solution that installs out-of-the-box on the NetWare 4.1 network operating system. No custom development or knowledge of the UNIX(r) system is required. Beta customers running NetWare Web Server report success installing and configuring a Web server, creating a Web page, and viewing it all within 10 minutes.

The Customer View

Novell's NetWare Web Server bundles many of the Web technologies that we have been seeking into an easy-to-use and efficient package," said Peter Lohmann, software engineer at AT&T Global Information Solutions - a beta test site. "The R-CGI and scripting features of NetWare Web Server allow us to do back-end processing while serving files and Web pages very quickly. This lets us use the power of the system more efficiently, enabling us to serve significantly more requests - or hits - far more quickly. Additionally, the R-CGI gives our internal tools the flexibility to run scripts on remote UNIX machines." NetWare Web Server

Accessing information on Web servers is quickly becoming a standard method for gathering information within the business community," said Vic Langford, vice president and general manager of Novell's Internet Commerce Division. Companies that set up Web servers are able to communicate more easily and effectively with customers, employees, resellers, partners, manufacturers, investors and other individuals and to offer company information more efficiently than through traditional communication methods. Our NetWare Web Server technology gives NetWare users a powerful way to publish information within their company and to the Internet community at large."

Leveraging NetWare Services

NetWare Web Server takes advantage of NDS by providing security through authentication of the user to directory services and access control to the data through Novell's secure file system. In addition, NetWare Web Server will also run with the NetWare SFT III(tm) fault-tolerant solution, protecting data and enabling the Web server to stay up and running 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

NetWare Web Server takes advantage of NetWare 4.1 Symmetric Multiprocessing(tm) (SMP), letting customers who expect a large amount of "hits" on their Web server to choose the appropriate size of hardware to meet their performance needs. As their Internet traffic increases, customers can expand their NetWare Web Server hardware in cost-effective increments by utilizing additional processors. SMP allows multiple Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP) processes to be run on SMP-enabled hardware.

Additional features in the NetWare Web Server package include the WordPerfect(r) Internet Publisher with built-in Netscape Navigator(tm), the market-leading World Wide Web browser, and BASIC and PERL script interpreters. Parameters for secure access controls, the Remote Common Gateway Interface (R-CGI) and a Windows-based graphical user interface for administration allow NetWare customers to publish high-impact and dynamic Web pages in a secure, easy to administer fashion.

Novell's Internet Commerce Division worked closely with American Internet Corp. (AIC) to develop NetWare Web Server. AIC provided the core technology, which was licensed and enhanced by Novell. AIC, based in Bedford, Mass., builds industrial strength Internet servers for the Novell NetWare environment.
