NOVELL ANNOUNCES NETWARE TRANSACTIONLINK

Brings Market-Leading Transaction Services of TUXEDO to NetWare 4 Users

Florham Park, NJ--October 31, 1995--Novell, Inc. today announced the shipment of NetWare® TransactionLink™, the first product to bring the market-leading transaction services of Novell's TUXEDO® System to NetWare 4 users. NetWare TransactionLink provides NetWare clients with access to transactional applications managed and secured by TUXEDO. The new product enables independent software vendors (ISVs) and corporate developers to create client/server applications that leverage the NetWare installed base and core NetWare services such as NetWare Directory Services (NDS). Businesses can now seamlessly integrate workgroup, enterprise, and inter-enterprise networks that connect diverse computer environments and support both personal productivity and distributed client/server applications, including high-performance transactional applications.

TUXEDO, Novell's market-leading open transaction monitor software, provides customers with the ability to easily develop, reliably deploy and cost effectively manage mission-critical applications distributed across client/server networks. Integration of TUXEDO and NetWare 4 advances Novell's strategy to make networks smart by extending distributed services and common application programming interfaces (APIs) across diverse client and server platforms. Novell intends to incorporate TUXEDO APIs in Net2000, its initiative to provide cross-platform APIs to its complete foundation of network services.

NetWare TransactionLink provides key middleware components for eliminating boundaries between workgroup, enterprise, and global networks supporting distributed client/server applications," said Joe Menard, vice president and general manager of Novell's Distributed Services Division. NetWare customers can build on their existing investments to deploy distributed applications that can be accessed anytime, anyplace."

NetWare TransactionLink, a subset of TUXEDO available for NetWare, provides a direct link to enterprise applications running on TUXEDO application servers elsewhere on the network. NetWare TransactionLink provides workstation connectivity, reliable application queues, transaction routing, protocol mapping and local workstation management to workstation and PC users. These users can connect to TUXEDO servers using their existing desktop hardware and TCP/IP or IPX/SPX protocol stacks, with no additional networking software required.

NetWare TransactionLink is integrated with NetWare Directory Services (NDS). This integration simplifies administration by allowing log-in permissions to be set by the NetWare administrator. This provides users with single log-in capability to their existing applications, as well as TUXEDO applications hosted elsewhere on the network. It also improves security in that only those users authorized by NDS can access TUXEDO applications.

By adding TransactionLink to their existing NetWare servers, users will now be able to not only access services such as file, print, e-mail etc. on NetWare, but also transparently access line-of business applications running elsewhere on the network.
