PerfectWorks for Kids Extends On-line Access Through Creativity Tools

LAS VEGAS -- November 13, 1995 -- Novell, Inc. today began shipping PerfectWorks for Kids®, the Windows 95, Homework-ready® product that integrates America Online® and Internet access with robust writing, painting and drawing tools. PerfectWorks for Kids is a visual learning environment for children ages 4-10 that encourages communication, exploration and creativity. It represents a key component in Novell's strategy to enable a Smart Global Network by providing users of all ages with network access, anytime and anyplace.

PerfectWorks for Kids goes beyond most stand-alone programs by integrating its creativity tools with the America Online starter kit. PerfectWorks for Kids provides 10 free hours of on-line time and launches users directly to the "Kids Only" section of America Online. Children can access a myriad of homework helping forums like the Academic Assistance Center or HomeworkHelp section, or they may want to explore National Geographic WORLD, Compton's Living Encyclopedia or Scholastic's Kids World, or other helpful and enriching resources.

"PerfectWorks for Kids will be one of the most useful products on a kid's computer because it combines easy-to-use drawing, painting and writing tools with the content-rich resources of America Online and the Internet," said Dan Rask, senior product manager, Novell Internet Commerce Division. "The talking interface and guided activities make PerfectWorks for Kids a great way to introduce young kids to a computer and supply them with a positive experience that will enrich their education and personal growth."

In addition to the Kids Only section, PerfectWorks for Kids supports the complete range of America Online's services, including e-mail and Internet access. Parents can easily select and customize other access points they wish to make available to younger users. Parents can also use the program's Address Book feature to record locations of helpful America Online forums and World Wide Web pages, enabling their children to access these resources with point-and-click ease. The Address Book ships with several online and Web page addresses already installed, including the Whitehouse, the Exploratorium science museum and the Smithsonian.

In addition to on-line access, kids will enjoy the various guided activities included in PerfectWorks for Kids. The program includes more than 880 graphics to help design colorful greeting cards in the Card Maker, signs in the Sign Studio and a new calendar in the Calendar Maker. Young kids can also develop letter recognition skills using the ABC Book activity and create a book about themselves in the Me by Me Book.

Kids ages 7-10 will quickly become productive using the program's Homework-ready features including the word processor's Book Report and Letter templates. The program also includes a 250,000-word spell checker to help kids produce error free documents. Kids will also enjoy their privacy by password-protecting their papers, book reports, letters and journals.

Kids ages 4-6 can begin familiarizing themselves with letters on the keyboard with a Keyboard Skills game, which invites users to race to find letters before they disappear. Two interactive stories entitled "Bugs" and "Bone" are also included to help young children develop hand-eye coordination between their computer screen and mouse.

Navigation within PerfectWorks for Kids is easy because the program uses a colorful desktop paradigm called the Creativity Workshop. The program's talking interface provides feedback and direction as children pass the mouse over various objects in the Creativity Workshop as well as all of the program's tools, icons and graphics.

In addition to the talking interface, PerfectWorks for Kids includes a text-to-speech module from Lernout& Hauspie, a premier provider of text-to-speech technology. This advanced technology helps young children to instantly know what they've written and will also correctly pronounce misspelled words.

PerfectWorks for Kids has a suggested retail price of $49.95 and is available at retailers, warehouse clubs and software superstores everywhere, or customers may call (800) 451-5151 or (801) 225-5000.
