Novell® and Stellar® One Partner to Connect TV Set-top Boxes to Smart Global Networks

Nested NetWare® Technology Provides Connectivity for Interactive TV Applications

LAS VEGAS, NV -- November 13, 1995 -- Novell®, Inc. today announced a partnership with Stellar® One Corporation to integrate Novell's Nested Netware® technology into the Stellar 1000 line of TV set-top boxes. Nested NetWare will provide network connectivity for TV set-top boxes and extend the network infrastructure for interactive TV applications such as high-quality digital audio and video, on-line information services, and control of intelligent home appliances.

"This partnership demonstrates our commitment to extending NetWare into new environments," said Darl McBride, vice president and general manager of Novell's Extended Networks Division. "Integrating Nested NetWare into Stellar One's line of set-top boxes is an important step for consumers. By partnering with Stellar One, we can leverage each other's expertise and develop innovative solutions for addressing the continuing convergence of consumer and networking technologies."

Nested NetWare (formerly known as NEST) is Novell's technology for inexpensively connecting any intelligent device to a NetWare network. Nested NetWare allows the Stellar 1000 set-top box, or any other smart device, to communicate information to other networked nodes, and be managed and secured from a central location. Novell views Nested NetWare as a pivotal component of its strategy to create a Smart Global Network by extending NetWare services beyond traditional PC-based LANs. Over 75 manufacturers are now creating hundreds of Nested NetWare products, with several of these products available today and over 30 more expected to reach the market by the end of 1995.

Stellar One and Novell's COMDEX Keynote Address

In his COMDEX keynote address on November 15, 1995, Novell Chairman and CEO Robert J. Frankenberg will demonstrate a potential application of the technology using a Stellar 1000 set-top box embedded with Nested NetWare. The demonstration will involve working product designs in an extended network applications environment.

Frankenberg's demonstration will include network access from work, home and a hotel room through a Stellar 1000 TV set-top box. Applications will include interactive playback and control of stored video on the network, live video transmission from a camera in the home with remote camera control, remote operation of home systems including lights and a VCR, and an intelligent home security system. The demonstration also highlights wireless paging, remote access to office GroupWise schedules, e-mail, and remote document processing and printing.

"This unique demonstration shows how consumer and networking technology are converging to support exciting new applications for the home and business," said Steve Voit, vice president, marketing at Stellar One Corporation. "Nested NetWare provides us with a variety of options for connecting our set-top boxes to data communication networks - everything from local and wide-area networking technologies like Ethernet to Novell's new Powerline technology. Novell's Powerline technology will allow customers to connect their set-top boxes to the network by simply plugging them into an electrical wall outlet."

In addition to providing access to external networks and services, set-top boxes with Nested NetWare will enable consumers to use menus and other displays on their television sets to manage home energy use and control intelligent appliances. Novell's Powerline technology, now in its developmental stages, will allow these home networks to use conventional AC wiring to connect devices and exchange information. Customers will be able to connect appliances to the network simply by plugging them into the utility grid.
