Novell Chairman and CEO Robert J. Frankenberg Speaks on Smart Global Network to Embrace and Improve the Internet

Actor Dennis Miller teams with Frankenberg at Comdex Keynote Event

COMDEX, Las Vegas, NV -- November 13, 1995 -- Novell chairman and chief executive officer Robert J. Frankenberg will speak on the evolution of the Smart Global Network connecting today's Internet, workgroup, and enterprise networks into a single network resource for business and consumers in his COMDEX keynote address, Wednesday, November 15. Frankenberg will outline Novell's plan for working in partnership with other computer and telecommunications leaders to create the Smart Global Network, which will change people's lives by connecting them to each other and the information they need, anytime and anyplace.

Actor and comedian Dennis Miller will introduce Frankenberg and help demonstrate the Novell solutions advancing the Smart Global Network for businesses and consumers today.

"The Smart Global Network will embrace and improve the Internet," Frankenberg said. "It will incorporate network innovations such as Novell's NetWare directory and security services, NetScape's browser, and Sun's Java language. It will expand individual horizons and forever change the way business is conducted, as enterprises of all sizes gain new reach to customers, partners and suppliers."

Highlights of the address include how The Smart Global Network will add security, manageability, accessibility and ease of use to the Internet and integrate it with the three million installed private NetWare networks. Novell's efforts to build the Smart Global Network focus on five strategic initiatives. Frankenberg will expand on each initiative through remarks and a live demonstration. The five key initiatives include:

  • Make networks smart. NetWare 4 leads the software industry in making networks smart -- affordable to own and administer, easy to manage, easy to use, and capable of connecting people with each other, the information they need, and the systems they rely on. NetWare 4 includes NetWare Directory Services (NDS), file, print, messaging, security, management, and multiprotocol routing services for connecting computers and intelligent devices to the Smart Global NetWork. Novell is now extending these NetWare services to manage and secure all major application servers, including UnixWare, HP/UX, SCO OpenServer, Microsoft Windows NT, and OS/2. Novell also extends network services with value-add products such as the ManageWise network management solution, NetWare Telephony Services for integrating computer and telephone networks, and the TUXEDO transaction monitor for developing and deploying high-performance client/server applications.

  • Interconnect smart networks. Novell, through the NetWare Connect Service soon to be offered by AT&T, Deutsche Telecom, NTT, Telstra, Unisource and other PTTs throughout the world will provide the industry's broadest and most powerful set of solutions for connecting smart networks. This pervasive connection enables customers to seamlessly and securely connect their current NetWare networks with any other NetWare network in the world and with the Internet;

  • Standard developer interfaces, enables developers to create cross-platform applications that exploit The Smart Global Network. Developers will now be able to expand their target markets and streamline their development cycles by creating applications that can run across the Smart Global Network, irrespective of computer platform. Net2000 will consist of a common set of APIs to enable cross-platform applications to exploit NetWare's full range of distributed services. It will also be accessible through the leading development tools such as Visual Basic, Delphi, and Visual C++ to streamline the application development cycle;

  • Provide rich network access. Novell's fast growing GroupWise and related groupware products leverage NetWare services to provide the most comprehensive and cost-effective collaborative computing solution -available today. Only GroupWise provides the user with a Universal InBox for all incoming and outgoing communication over the network. An industry leading 5 million users rely on GroupWise to access network resources through integrated E-mail, personal calendaring, group scheduling, voice mail, faxes, Internet messages, and task management.

  • Extend network access beyond LANs and PCS to connect intelligent devices of every kind -- from mainframe computers to microwave ovens. Novell's NESTed NetWare is the most flexible, compact and cost-efficient solution for integrating intelligent devices into network environments. Applications range from office equipment such as printers and fax machines to TV set-top boxes and other home appliances. In addition, a new Powerline Technology module enables users to connect devices and exchange information over the electric utility grid. Five products using Nested NetWare are now shipping, with over 30 more due by the end of the year and over 300 in development by more than 70 worldwide OEMs.

Frankenberg's demonstration will include network access from work, home and a hotel room through a Stellar One TV set-top box. The demonstration shows how the network knows who you are and where you are, making it easy to remotely access critical information and resources.

The address, including "warm-up" with Dennis Miller, will take place Wednesday, November 15, 9 am to 10 am in the Theater for Performing Arts at the Aladdin Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada.
