New Clustering Technology for UnixWare 2 Makes Debut at Pentium Pro Processor Event

Enhances Reliability and Availability of Distributed Applications

NEW YORK, New York -- November 7, 1995 -- Novell today demonstrated new clustering technology for UnixWare 2 that will support parallel database applications on the Intel platform and improve the reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS) of database and other applications distributed across the Smart Global Network. Novell and its partner, The Santa Cruz Operation, Inc. (SCO), envision the clustering technology as an add-on product to SCO's UnixWare release planned for mid-1996. The technology was demonstrated here today on a Pentium™Pro processor-based Compaq ProLiant server running UnixWare 2 with Oracle7™ Parallel Server.

By distributing applications across tightly integrated groups or "clusters" of servers, customers can ensure system responsiveness in the event of hardware or software failure. UnixWare's clustering capabilities, further enhanced by the clustering-enabled technology of the Intel Pentium Pro processor, will enable multiple independent computers or intelligent devices to simultaneously share access to common disk storage and other networked devices.

"The UnixWare clustering technology demonstrated here today will help customers distribute line-of-business applications across the network in a reliable and cost-effective way," said Mike De Fazio, senior vice president of development for Novell's operating system division. "Because UnixWare will continue to support NetWare Directory Services (NDS) and other NetWare services, customers will be able to seamlessly integrate their clustered servers into enterprise and global networks."

Effective on or about December 1, SCO will market and sell UnixWare 2. Following a mid-1996 UnixWare release, SCO in 1997 will ship a merged product that combines the best features of UnixWare with its SCO OpenServer™ Release 5 operating system. This merged product will incorporate NetWare Directory Services (NDS) and other distributed NetWare services to support integration with workgroup, enterprise, inter-enterprise, and business-to-consumer networks. On September 20, Novell announced plans to sell its UNIX business to SCO and acquire a significant minority position in SCO.

The new UnixWare clustering technology will make a range of RAS capabilities available in a shrink wrapped package. Features include an easy-to-use cluster management system; configuration and management of clusters from one to four nodes; automatic resources fail-over support, from applications to whole systems; tools to create custom detectors and fail-over scripts for NFS; database and generic applications; uninterrupted network user access during node failure; and support for parallel database applications such as Oracle 7 parallel server.

"The availability and support for both UnixWare and SCO OpenServer system on the Pentium Pro processor is another major milestone in SCO's commitment to bring enterprise-level computing to businesses of all sizes," noted Scott McGregor, senior vice president, products, SCO. "With the addition of advanced technology, such as UnixWare's clustering capability for the Oracle7 Parallel Server, our customers can develop a new generation of advanced business-critical applications. Organizations of all kinds can now afford to develop and deploy business-critical servers that offer mainframe and mini-computer capabilities."

"The Pentium Pro processor extends the Intel Architecture to address the demanding requirements of the enterprise server market for reliability, availability and scalability," said Dave House, vice president and general manager of Intel's Enterprise Server Group. "Our technology cooperation with Oracle, Compaq, SCO and Novell provides UnixWare clustering technology that delivers performance once limited to proprietary systems on industry-standard Intel Pentium Pro processor-based servers."

"Advanced clustering capabilities further confirm the strengths of UnixWare as an application server platform for business critical computing, " says Richard French, vice president of the Intel Unix Products Division for Oracle "As the only database vendor providing scalable technology for clusters, we are pleased to showcase Oracle7 Parallel Server running on UnixWare 2".
