Novell Hosts Key Developers at Novell Partner Summit

Top Developers Provide Feedback on Net2000, Receive Early Alpha Release& SDK for Green River, Make Cooperative Marketing Plans

Provo, UT--December 6, 1995--Underscoring its commitment to the NetWare developer community, Novell will this week host the network industry's top developers at the Novell Partner Summit in Monterey, California, on December 6-8. During the summit Novell will demonstrate to developers that it is on track to deliver the first two milestones of the NetWare product roadmap outlined in September: the development interface code-named Net2000 and the next release of the NetWare® 4 operating system, code-named Green River.

These milestones are essential building blocks for a Smart Global Network that connects computer users worldwide into enterprise, inter-enterprise and business-to-consumer networks. This Smart Global Network will provide a single environment that integrates the heterogenous computing platforms in use today, giving people easy, seamless access to the information they need from any location.

"We are on track to deliver the network products and technologies we announced at NetWorld+Interop, and support from our developer partners will be key to our initiatives' success," said Richard King, executive vice president and general manager of Novell's Systems Group. "NetWare not only provides the best networking platform and services on which developers can build solutions, it also provides the volume platform developers can leverage to grow their businesses. The purpose of this summit is to show key developers we're committed to partnering with them on both a technical and marketing level to ensure our mutual success."

The Novell Partner Summit capitalizes on the enormous developer support that has built around NetWare over the past 13 years. Today more than 6,000 hardware and software solutions are available for NetWare--more than for any other network operating system in the world. Over 140 of these software solutions take advantage of NetWare Directory Services® (NDS®), the industry's leading directory service that is built into NetWare 4. NDS turns a multiserver network into a single, integrated information system that is easier to access, easier to manage, and less expensive to own, operate and maintain.

Attending the Partner Summit are 60 of the top network development companies, many of whom partnered with Novell in the Novell Directory Assistance® (NDA®) program to create and market their NDS-integrated solutions. These 60 vendors represent key solutions areas for network customers: database, management, security, telephony, imaging, messaging, network utilities and network hardware.

"Novell is clearly taking a leadership role in moving the network industry into the 21st century," said Jerry Baker, senior vice president of Product and Platform Technologies for Oracle Corp. "As Novell moves forward in creating a Smart Global Network, Oracle's support for Novell's NetWare 4 and NDS become increasingly vital to meeting our customers' needs. We are pleased to continue our long partnership with Novell to help make the ®networked world' a reality."

"With Net2000, we believe Novell is renewing its efforts to provide greater return on investment for developers by making it easier to build distributed applications," said Ted E. Schlein, vice president of Networking and Client/Server Technologies for Symantec Corp. "Net2000 is key to supporting the NetWare developer community, and Novell has shown us that it is on track to deliver Net2000 in 1996."

Net2000 and Green River

The Partner Summit marks the first in a series of milestones that will lead to the general availability of Net2000 in 1996. Net2000 is Novell's universal programming interface for simplifying the development of distributed, "smart" network applications. This interface will enable developers to easily incorporate NetWare networking services into their distributed applications, allowing them to leverage a managed, secure and scalable network services infrastructure. For users, Smart Network Applications provide global access, plug-and-play installation, and are inherently secure and manageable. System administrators see a consistent view of the network even if the applications are running on heterogenous platforms.

Developers at the Partner Summit will hear presentations on the business opportunities and value propositions in building their solutions on Novell's advanced services through Net2000. After this initial developer feedback is gathered, Novell will begin holding special interest group (SIG) meetings with developers in January 1996 to finalize Net2000 architecture and design. The Net2000 interface specifications will be available as a pre-release software developer's kit (SDK) at BrainShare in March 1996, with the full Net2000 SDK scheduled for shipment by the end of 1996.

The Partner Summit also marks a key milestone for Green River, the next release of the world's best-selling NetWare 4 network operating system. Developers attending the summit will receive an early Green River alpha release and SDK. Green River builds on the solid foundation of NetWare 4.1 to expand the distributed network services that NetWare provides--services that are essential to building smart networks and that will be exposed by the Net2000 interface. New and enhanced services that will be part of Green River include licensing services, security services, messaging services and client services. Green River is scheduled to begin beta testing in the spring of 1996 and be generally available in 1996.

Partnering is Fundamental

A key purpose of the Novell Partner Summit is to show developers how they can partner with Novell on both a technical and marketing level to successfully create and market their NetWare-compatible products. Partnering opportunities discussed at the summit will include:
  • DeveloperNet®, Novell's developer subscription service that provides tools, information and support to help software developers create network applications. DeveloperNet is Novell's primary communications channel for delivering technical information and assistance to developers.
  • The Yes program, a Novell co-marketing program that enables developers to use Novell's Yes logos to let customers know their hardware or software product runs with NetWare. Novell's Yes logo is recognized by network customers worldwide as a mark that indicates a specific product's compatibility with Novell products, with a recent survey showing that 81 percent of NetWare buyers consider the presence of the Yes logo an important criteria in their product purchase decisions.
  • Additional co-marketing opportunities in which developers can partner with Novell, including joint road shows, advertising, direct mail, and customer and reseller seminars.
"Novell has refocused on providing developers with the support and information they need when they need it," said Gary Mueller, vice president of Novell's Corporate Developer Relations. "We consider ISVs, corporate, commercial and other developers our valued customers, and we are committed to partnering with them on all levels to ensure they and we are successful."
