Novell Enriches Windows 95 User Access to NetWare Services

Updated NetWare Client 32 for Windows 95 Open Beta Software is Feature-Complete and Available Online From Novell

PROVO, Utah--December 19, 1995--Propelled by positive user response to the NetWare Client 32™ for Windows 95 open beta software, Novell, Inc. today announced the early delivery of updated open beta software to give Windows 95 users full access to NetWare™ 4 networking services, including Novell's industry-standard NetWare Directory Services™ (NDS™). The feature-complete NetWare Client 32 for Windows 95 is available free of charge to all NetWare users through Novell's NetWire™ forum on CompuServe and the World Wide Web.

NetWare Client 32 for Windows 95 users also receive NetWare Application Manager™ software to streamline and monitor application usage across the network. Together, the products constitute a key component in Novell's strategy to enable a Smart Global Network by extending NetWare services to a broad range of desktops, application servers and intelligent devices.

"Novell is committed to delivering the most reliable and feature-rich client software to connect to essential NetWare services," said William Donahoo, senior director of product marketing for Novell's NetWare Products Division. "With positive customer and industry influencer reaction to the first NetWare Client 32 for Windows 95 beta release, we're convinced our common-architecture Client 32 software will give Microsoft users the best access to NetWare environments."

Users of the NetWare Client 32 for Windows 95 will benefit from its tight integration with native Windows 95 installation processes and network access interfaces to provide easy connectivity to NetWare services. Users can also quickly customize configuration through the Windows 95 Registry to optimize network client performance, flexibility and security. Novell leveraged the Windows 95 "Provider" interface to give users a network-wide hierarchical view of NetWare directory resources to easily locate NetWare servers, printers and services. By extending native Windows 95 interfaces to support Novell's comprehensive directory services, Novell lets NetWare Client 32 users access services anywhere on the network through the familiar Windows 95 Network Neighborhood and Explorer interfaces.

In addition to giving Windows 95 users access to NetWare 2.x, 3.x and 4.x resources, the NetWare Client 32 supports long file name conventions; supports an organization's choice of network protocols, hardware and applications; enables reliable network security; and eases network diagnosis. In the event of a temporary physical network failure, the client also features extensive automatic reconnect capabilities to re-attach to all previous services and resources, virtually eliminating the impact of short-term network downtime. The NetWare Client 32 also includes the new NetWare Application Manager to ease network application user administration.

With the updated NetWare Client 32 for Windows 95 open beta, administrators and users now benefit from additional capabilities:

  • Authenticate to, and simultaneously browse resources on multiple NDS trees;
  • Configure multiple workstation clients through system policies;
  • Connect to servers via RAS (remote access server) support;
  • Use a graphical management tool to administer individual NetWare file access and rights;
  • Update client software automatically across a network;
  • Browse for servers or NDS trees to select network resources during a graphical login.
The second NetWare Client 32 for Windows 95 open beta release is currently available to Windows 95 users at no charge from NetWire on CompuServe (GO NETWIRE) and the World Wide Web (http://netwire.novell.com). The final NetWare Client 32 for Windows 95 will be available, free of charge, to NetWare users in early 1996. For additional information, customers can contact Novell at 1-800-NETWARE, or download information from NetWire on CompuServe or the World Wide Web (http://www.novell.com).
