Novell's GroupWise WebAccess Provides Collaborative
Computing Over The Internet
For the First Time, Users Can Access E-mail, Voice Mail Messages, Faxes, Calendar and
Tasks from their GroupWise Universal In Box from any Internet Browser
INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- January 30, 1996 -- Novell, Inc. today announced GroupWise
WebAccess, the first product for collaborative communication and information coordination over
the Internet. Unveiled at Demo'96 today, GroupWise WebAccess provides anytime, anyplace
access to the GroupWise Universal In Box allowing users to schedule group meetings, listen to
voice mail, receive documents, send Internet E-mail, view faxes, access the GroupWise Address
Book and read attachments from any workstation with an Internet connection and an HTML
1.0-compliant web browser regardless of where they are.
"Novell is the first company to dissolve the boundaries between the Internet and collaborative
computing," said David Coursey, editor and publisher of P.C. Letter. "In the past, groupware
users could only access simple electronic mail from the Internet. Now, with GroupWise
WebAccess, users can access collaborative computing capabilities from any Internet connection,
representing a significant advantage for GroupWise in the competitive groupware market."
"The majority of our field personnel obtain corporate information from our SABRE host.
American Airlines needs a method of providing field employees with easier access to corporate
information over our corporate Intranet," said Randy Blaschke, systems engineer, American
Airlines. "The vast array of World Wide Web applications available today allows companies to
disseminate information in a more cost effective manner. Solutions like GroupWise WebAccess
will allow us to tap into our existing GroupWise infrastructure while allowing easier access to
corporate information using Web technology."
Functionality Beyond Internet E-Mail
With GroupWise WebAccess, remote users can stay fully connected to the home office, the
corporate Intranet and the internal messaging/communications system when traveling, working on
the road or from home. By extending the functionality beyond E-mail to include collaborative
computing for Internet users, GroupWise WebAccess increases productivity and information
distribution while improving communications with both internal and external contacts.
"Mobile, Internet, corporate Intranet and underpowered workstation users, as well as on-line
service providers, will be among the first to benefit from the quick, anytime, anyplace access
provided by GroupWise WebAccess," said Stewart Nelson, vice president and general manager,
Novell GroupWare Division. "GroupWise WebAccess truly embodies Novell's strategy of a Smart
Global Network and its commitment in delivering new capabilities and features by supplying
anytime, anywhere access," Nelson said.
Using GroupWise WebAccess
As a server based product, GroupWise WebAccess allows users to access a GroupWise
PostOffice with an Internet or Intranet connection and an HTML 1.0-compliant web browser with
no desktop configuration required. With GroupWise WebAccess, the GroupWise client is
delivered via an HTML page which is accessible from the same familiar web browsers that
customers use everyday. Now, users who prefer the Internet work environment can receive near
real-time access to their Universal In Box and can move back and forth between GroupWise
WebAccess and other Home Pages with a few clicks of the mouse.
GroupWise WebAccess also provides a single box solution for Novell NetWare 4 users running
an NLM-based HTTP server. For example, GroupWise WebAccess can coexist on the same
machine with NetWare, the NetWare Web Server and the GroupWise message server. This
dramatically reduces hardware costs while improving integration between the Internet and the
enterprise.
In addition to the one box approach, the GroupWise WebAccess can also take advantage of
whatever the Unix, NT or OS/2 web server exists at an organization. This two box solution
combines a GroupWise Post Office Server, GroupWise WebAccess Server and GroupWise
WebAccess Message Server with a non-NetWare HTTP Web Server which is compliant with
CGI.
Pricing and Availability
The GroupWise WebAccess product, compatible with GroupWise 4.1 and the future GroupWise
XTD product, will be released in Q2'96. The suggested retail price for GroupWise WebAccess for
a 10-user pack is $249; 50-user pack, $1,100; and 100-user pack, $1,999. For organizations with
100 or more GroupWise licenses, corresponding GroupWise WebAccess licenses can purchased
