Novell Organizes Products Group to Provide Customers
with Integrated Network Solutions
Units to focus Internet/Intranet Services, Distributed Networks
and Small-Office Markets
OREM, Utah -- February 15 , 1996 -- Following the January 31
sale of its personal productivity applications business to Corel
Corporation, Novell, Inc. today announced that its new Novell Products
Group has organized to directly focus product development and
marketing on growth markets for network software and the delivery of
integrated network solutions. Three units created within the group
address Internet/Intranet services markets, distributed networks, and
Small-Office/Home Office (SOHO) networks. The new organization shifts
Novell resources toward solutions that extend personal computer
local-area networks (LANs) across the Internet and other global
networks.
"The definition of networks is expanding, creating new
opportunities and customer expectations," said Robert J. Frankenberg,
Novell chairman and CEO. "Customers want smart private networks
combined with secure, reliable, and manageable access to the Internet.
Novell has the technology, the market experience, and the organization to
meet these customer needs."
Steve Markman, executive vice president and general manager,
Novell Products Group, said, "The new organization aligns Novell
development and marketing to deliver high-value solutions to our
customers. We intend to provide more value to our customers by rapidly
evolving Novell solutions that improve the way businesses use the
Internet. By building on our foundation of NetWare services, including
NetWare Directory Services, we intend to expand our base of over 50
million users and extend our leadership in network software."
The Novell Products Group includes three new market units and a
new operations unit.
- Internet/Intranet markets application-level products for the Internet, the NetWare Web Server for Intranet and Internet access and publishing, and technology to support managed Internet and commerce services through NetWare Connect Services (NCS). The unit is also advancing Novell's GroupWise family of groupware products for use with the Internet and is carrying forward Novell Embedded Systems Technology (NEST) as a high-performance solution for integrating power line and cable systems with the Internet. Vic Langford, formerly vice president and general manager of Novell's Internet Commerce Division, is the division's new senior vice president and general manager.
- Distributed Networks addresses the network solution needs of organizations connecting multiple LANs and business sites. Carrying forward Novell's leadership in distributed network solutions, this unit is focused on making Novell network services available across diverse computer platforms. The unit is also responsible for the continued development of the core NetWare operating system platform, Novell's smart network services, integrated back-office solutions, network and desktop management solutions, and the initiative code-named Net2000 to provide developers with common interfaces to network services. Steve Markman will lead the unit on an interim basis.
- Small-Office/Home Office (SOHO) is focused on integrated solutions designed to meet the special requirements of SOHO customers and other single-site market segments. Novell solutions deliver unique value to SOHO customers through access to managed WAN and Internet service through NetWare Connect Services (NCS), out-sourcing of network management with Novell's ManageWise product, integration of NetWare with GroupWise network-based messaging, and more. Ed Bartos, formerly senior director of national accounts, is the unit's new senior vice president and general manager. Bartos has worked closely with Novell resellers and partners for nine years in sales management positions.
- Group Operations provides coordination across the group in the areas of finance, product marketing, business development, strategic business planning, developer relations, process development, and management training. Jeffrey Waxman, formerly executive vice president and general manager of the Novell Applications Group, is now senior vice president and general manager for this unit.
Richard King, formerly senior vice president and general
manager, Novell Systems Group, is leaving Novell to pursue other
interests. David Bradford, senior vice president and general counsel, has
assumed the additional responsibility of managing Mergers, Acquisitions,
and Investments, previously part of Novell's corporate development
organization. R. Duff Thompson, formerly senior vice president,
corporate development, will report to Frankenberg. He will lead special
projects and represent Novell on the corporate boards of Geoworks and
The Santa Cruz Operation, Inc. (SCO).
