Novell Education Declares March "Certification Month"
Governor Declares March Certification Month, New Secondary
Education Market Announced, and Networking Technology in
Utah and Worldwide at BrainShare '96
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- March 6, 1996 -- Utah Governor Mike
Leavitt and Provo-based Novell Education, the pioneer and world leader
in education and certification programs within the information technology
(IT) industry, announced Tuesday that March 1996 has been declared
"Certification Month." With more than 320,000 individuals earning Novell
certifications or in the process of doing so, Novell's CNE, Master CNE,
Certified Novell Administrator (CNA), and Certified Novell Instructor (CNI)
certifications continue to lead the IT industry and further distinguish these
programs as the most successful.
Throughout the month of March, the company will celebrate what
Novell Chairman and CEO Robert Frankenberg says is a "pervasive
impact"--the impact Novell-certified technical support professionals have
had and are having on changing the way people use network software
worldwide.
Novell Education Academic Partner (NEAP) Program
Additionally, Novell commemorates the second annual certification
month by announcing the new Novell Education Academic Partner
(NEAP) -Secondary program, available to all non-profit secondary or high
school level audiences. The NEAP-Secondary program will bring Novell's
globally-recognized technical certification, the CNA, directly to the
students with authorized training in secondary schools, enabling
students to get current, work-related job skills in the IT field. Participating
schools must apply and meet certain criteria to participate in the
NEAP-Secondary programs. The CNA certification is less than three
years old, yet has grown to more than 93,000 certified individuals
worldwide.
Program Endorsements
According to Dr. Scott W. Bean, Utah State Superintendent of
Public Instruction, the CNE and CNA certifications are used as a basis for
hiring in Utah.
"Novell's NEAP-Secondary program now provides a pipeline for
students to get the training, resources and industry certifications early
enough to compete in today's job market and access to well-paying
careers," he said. "Our goal is to have every high school in the state of
Utah up and running with the NEAP-Secondary program within three
years."
"With so many companies now using Novell networks, technical
support specialists who can administer them are in demand, said Anika
Thorbourne, a recent high school graduate who received her CNA
certification through the Virginia Beach Public School District. "I wanted
to pursue the CNA certification because of the value placed on the
credential and the career path and monetary rewards associated with it.
When you're 18 years old and people find out you're a CNA, it's
powerful." Virginia Beach City Public School District has participated in
Novell's NEAP-Secondary pilot program since 1994.

Certification Statistics
The value of Novell's certifications to organizations is readily
recognized and well- quantified by industry and Novell data showing that
companies use CNE as a criteria for hiring, raising, and promoting
employees. Fortune 500 companies and small businesses alike rely on
in-house or contracted CNEs to service and support their networks.
In addition to the service impact Novell-certified employees make
in organizations around the world, there are more than 82,000 CNEs;
6,500 Master CNEs; 93,000 CNAs; and 4,000 CNIs; as well as 135,000
"candidates-in-progress." This totals more than 320,000 Novell
certifications or certifications in progress. During last year's kickoff
Certification Month, Novell celebrated the naming of its 50,000th CNE and
3,000th CNI milestone by flying them to BrainShare U.S.A.; Jan Schipper
from The Netherlands (50,000th CNE), and Daniel Meservy from Concord,
Calif. (3,000th CNI).
Novell's training infrastructure, which started with 30 sites in the
United States, has spread to more than 1,450 Novell Authorized
Education Centers (NAECs) around the globe, including 10 in Utah.
Additionally, Novell's training is offered as degree-bearing credits at a
number of universities, colleges, and junior colleges throughout the
