Novell Announces NetWare MultiProtocol Router 3.1 Products--
Allow Users to Interconnect Business Networks and Connect to
Internet
Novell's software-based router is a scalable communications
server that provides flexible internetworking and branch office
connectivity
OREM, Utah -- March 18, 1996 -- Novell, Inc. today announced
the release of its NetWare MultiProtocol Router 3.1 products, a new
release of its scalable communications server software that gives
businesses a cost-effective way to make connections among business
networks and to the global Internet. The products are a key link in the
infrastructure for Novell's Smart Global Network, interconnecting private
and public business networks into a single information resource.
The already robust LAN/WAN functions of NetWare MultiProtocol
Router have been expanded to include support for ISDN and ATM,
providing higher speed and more flexible media choices. NetWare
MultiProtocol Router 3.1 includes NetWare Mobile IPX technology, which
allows laptop users to maintain wireless LAN connections throughout a
campus environment. And its new dynamic dial backup feature can
establish a dial-up link when a primary wide area network (WAN) link
goes down.
In combination with other Novell software, NetWare MultiProtocol
Router 3.1 provides businesses with cost-effective solutions for a
variety of needs, including:
* Connecting remote users to all the resources of their office
networks--using NetWare MultiProtocol Router, NetWare Mobile and
NetWare Connect.
* Connecting users to the Internet and publishing information on the
Internet--using NetWare MultiProtocol Router, NetWare Web Server and
NetWare NFS Services.
* Connecting remote users to information and applications on host
computers or UNIX machines--using NetWare MultiProtocol Router with
NetWare for SAA or NetWare NFS Services.
All of these Novell software products run on industry standard
PCs. They can be added to an existing NetWare server or set up on a
dedicated communications server. Either way, they minimize the user's
investment in special-purpose hardware.
"Our customers need integrated wide area networking solutions
that enable them to interconnect their organizations' global networks and
that provide them with seamless connectivity between locations, to their
partners and to outside resources such as the Internet," said Tom
Steding, Vice President and General Manager of Novell's Communications
Infrastructure Division.
NetWare MultiProtocol Router products
* NetWare BranchLink Router 3.1 offers IPX, TCP/IP and AppleTalk routing
and source route bridging. It supports two WAN connections and can
scale from low-cost analog WANs up to two full T1 or E1 circuits.
* NetWare Enterprise Router 3.1 provides functionality similar to that of
the NetWare BranchLink Router and supports up to 16 WAN ports.
Multiple copies can be installed to provide up to 64 ports.
* WAN*Extensions 3.1 extends the functionality of both the NetWare
BranchLink Router and the NetWare Enterprise Router products by
offering connection services to ATM, Frame Relay and X.25 networks.
* SNA*Extensions 3.1 enhances the connectivity of IBM-related
applications by offering industry-standard DLSw, SNA/NetBIOS
translational bridging and multiprotocol routing across SNA backbones.
