Novell Licenses Open Market Technology to Support Electronic
Commerce on Intranets and the Internet
Leading Electronic Transaction Management Software to Run on
NetWare in Business Networks
BRAINSHARE '96, Salt Lake City, Utah -- March 18, 1996 --
Novell, Inc. today announced that it has licensed leading technology from
Open Market, Inc. to enable a new generation of electronic commerce
solutions for intranets and the Internet. Novell will integrate Open
Market's OM-SecureLink technology with NetWare to provide customers
with a high-performance, cost-effective solution for establishing and
maintaining online storefronts and managing electronic transactions on
the World Wide Web. These commerce services will complement the
complete foundation of network services provided by Novell to enable a
Smart Global Network interconnecting today's private business networks
and the Internet.
Novell will use OM-SecureLink technology to enable customers to
connect their web server to Open Market's OM-Transact, the transaction
management system for secure Internet commerce. These back-office
services can be hosted by either a third-party provider or internally on
the corporate intranet. The Open Market technology utilizes digital
encryption technology to securely transmit "Digital Offers" from a
customer's server to the back-office service provider. To ensure the
integrity of the transactions, OM-Transact checks each "Digital Offer"
using a secret key it shares with the customer.
"Together with Open Market, Novell is developing solutions to
provide an important step in delivering secure financial transactions,"
said Robert J. Frankenberg, Novell chairman and CEO. "The installed
base of 3 million NetWare Servers, and the power of NetWare Directory
Services to secure and manage customer networks, will make online
storefronts and electronic transaction management an integral part of
how people do business."
"Partnering with a leading networking company like Novell is an
important piece of our business strategy to make electronic commerce
easy and readily available for companies who want to conduct business
on the World Wide Web," said Gary Eichorn, CEO of Open Market. "By
incorporating our technology with Novell's NetWare Web Server line,
we've created a powerful combined solution for promoting Internet
commerce."
NetWare is an optimal platform for electronic commerce due to the
secure, managed, high- performance environment created by NetWare
Directory Services (NDS). The integration of OM-SecureLink with NDS
will allow IS managers a substantial level of control over electronic
commerce security issues by ensuring that transactions are authorized
correctly. In addition, Novell customers will be able to outsource some of
the complexity and cost of hosting the transaction management system
by subscribing to NetWare Connect Services (NCS).
The Novell and Open Market solutions will enable customers to
support secure transactions while protecting existing investments in
hardware and software. The solutions will improve cashflow for the
customer, as electronic transactions can be processed and resolved
faster than with all-paper mechanisms, and will enable cost reductions
through outsourcing of the billing process. Businesses will also benefit
from improved inventory management and processing of orders, an
expanded ability to do business worldwide and 24-hours per day, and
access to new customers and markets through the web.
Novell plans to ship the Open Market technology in an integrated
web server product in late 1996.
