Unveil SmartSITE for SmartUTAH Intranet
Novell Internet/Intranet Technology Realizes Leavitt's Vision of
Communities Connected to the Smart Global Network
BRAINSHARE '96, Salt Lake City, Utah -- March 18, 1996 --
Novell, Inc., in conjunction with U S WEST, Inc. and Uinta Business
Systems, today announced the delivery of SmartSite, the technology
cornerstone for the SmartUTAH Intranet .
SmartSite is a turn-key hardware and software solution that lets
governments, businesses, organizations and people work together over
computer networks. Specifically, SmartSite is a cost-effective PC server
that comes with workgroup services including e-mail, group scheduling
and calendaring, document sharing and workflow management; a web
server; and directory services that make SmartSite especially easy to
install and use.
"Utah is delivering on the promise of the information age," said
Michael O. Leavitt, governor of Utah. "Every organization, business and
government agency will be able to buy affordable, easy to use servers
that connect to SmartUTAH, enabling citizens to participate in government
as they have never been able to before. The state will benefit from
SmartUTAH through increased economic development. Small and medium
sized businesses will be more competitive and new business will be
attracted to the state."
"As a Utah-based company, Novell is especially pleased to
participate in this ground breaking achievement to connect people,
organizations and businesses, and with their government and each
other," said Robert J. Frankenberg, Novell chairman and CEO. "Utah is
applying the technology that has won Novell the leadership of the
network software market: NetWare 4.1 with NetWare Directory Services
(NDS); the NetWare Web Server and GroupWise with Web Access.
These tools will help the state serve its citizens better while
strengthening Utah's economic base."
Using the SmartUTAH Intranet, businesses will be able to respond
to government bids quicker, people will be able to renew their drivers
license without having to go to the Department of Motor Vehicles, and
parents will be able to more conveniently communicate with their
childrens' teachers.
The SmartUTAH Intranet is the result of the interconnected
SmartSites. The SmartSites build on the Internet by delivering a fully
commerce-enabled collaboration system. Due to their affordability and
ease-of-use, SmartSites will be especially valuable for non-profit
organizations, business associations, city and county governments and
others who wish to collaborate over the Internet. Because the SmartSite
platform is based on standards and is an open solution, solution
providers will work with each customer to customize SmartSite to
individual needs.
"U S WEST's role in building the SmartSite platform is providing the
network connectivity," said Kevin B. Taylor, general manager for local
markets in Utah. "This is the equivalent of giving democracy a dialtone."
Beside providing network connectivity, U S WEST will sell SmartSite to
selected markets.
"Uinta is the company bringing all the different components
together, selling SmartSite, installing it and then providing support as
necessary," said Joe Weis, president of Uinta Business Systems (UBS).
UBS, the largest PC reseller in Utah, delivers system integration, training
and support.
The SmartSite solution is available now. Novell is hosting the
SmartCenter in its Salt Lake City office -- the facilities, equipment and
staff used to create and manage the first SmartSite. SmartCenter is
available online to provide information about implementing and registering
SmartSites.
