Novell Presents $50,000 Toward Creation of Discovery Park
Sponsorship demonstrates the Company's Commitment to
Utah County Children
Orem, Utah -- March 18, 1996 -- Today, in its largest cash
contribution this year, Novell Inc. presented a $50,000 check to Utah
County children for the building of the new Novell Children's Discovery
Park, a Pleasant Grove Centennial Project.
David Bradford, Novell Senior Vice President of Law and
Corporate Development, made the official presentation to benefit area
children, who were represented at the ceremonies by a group of 50
students from Grovecrest Elementary school, Pleasant Grove; members
of the Centennial Discovery Park Committee; and Pleasant Grove City
officials.
The children opened the ceremonies by singing a Utah Centennial
Song. Bradford then presented the check to Park General Coordinator
Michael Daniels, Pleasant Grove Mayor Lloyd Ash and Pleasant Grove
City Council member Jim Danklef. In making the presentation, Bradford
recognized Novell's commitment to providing a unique place for children
to experience the discovery process during their early years.
"We must mine the minds of our children," said Bradford, quoting
Novell founder Ray Noorda. Bradford talked briefly about the people who
were responsible for establishing both Novell and WordPerfect
companies. These people grew up in Utah County, studied math and
science, and then went on to create technology to solve some of today's
problems. Novell is pleased to be involved in helping new generations of
children discover the principles of math and science.
The park, which will be known as Novell Children's Discovery
Park, was conceived to include themes designed by the same children
who will have the opportunity to participate with their parents and
friends in the actual construction of the park. Pleasant Grove City was
the first contributor to the park with its donation of land valued in excess
of $35,000 plus seed money of $30,000.
The playground and science discovery park will be built at Manila
Park in Pleasant Grove from mostly donated materials. In only nine days
(May 2-4 and 6-11), volunteers will work a total of more than 26,000
hours to complete one of the largest and most ambitious parks of its kind
in the United States.
Not only is Novell donating a meaningful portion of the $200,000
cash necessary to build this million-dollar park, but many Novell
employees and their families plan to participate in the building process.
