Novell's NetWare 4.1 Momentum Continues -- NetWare 4 Now World's Best-Selling Network Operating System

NetWare 4 Connections Increased More Than 400 percent in 1995; Customers Turning to Novell Directory Services for Ease of Use, Ease of Administration, Return on Investment

OREM, Utah -- March 21, 1996 -- Novell today announced that according to soon to be released findings from a leading market research firm, International Data Corporation (IDC), NetWare remains the overwhelming leader in both the network operating system market and the larger market for all server operating systems. According to the IDC Report, expected to be released in April, Novell shipped in 1995 more NetWare connections (51 percent) than all other server operating systems in the world combined -- including those from Microsoft, IBM, Sun, Hewlett-Packard, Banyan, SCO, and all other Unix and NOS systems. NetWare 4 connections, or nodes, sales increased more than 400 percent in 1995, making NetWare 4 the world's best-selling server operating system. In the network operating system category NetWare maintains an overwhelming 63 percent market share.

"Novell is clearly the market share leader in the server and network operating system markets," said Lee Doyle, NOS Analyst at IDC. "Novell has led the LAN OS industry for the past 12 years, and IDC predicts continued strong growth for NetWare through the end of the century. Customers are finding that Novell Directory Services, a central component of NetWare 4.1, enables them to handle the management of countless resources on heterogeneous systems spread around the globe. As a result, a recent IDC survey shows that NetWare 4 customers are planning to expand their installations by 258 percent."

Customers Turning to NetWare 4 for Advanced Directory Services

Businesses of all sizes are turning to NetWare 4.1 for the network reliability, ease of administration, and return on investment offered through Novell Directory Services, the directory that is built-in to NetWare 4.1. NDS has now emerged as the de facto industry standard for distributed network directories, providing easier access and easier management of network resources.

"Customers have told us that they require the true, global directory service provided by NetWare 4 and NDS over the workgroup-based domains offered by Microsoft Windows NT Server and OS/2 Warp Server," said Steve Markman, executive vice president for the Novell Products Group. "NDS not only greatly lowers the cost of network ownership today, it provides the foundation for Client-Network Computing which will enable organizations of all sizes to conduct business over the Intranets and Internet."

INTELSAT, the world's leading provider of international satellite telecommunications, recently made the decision to replace 62 Microsoft NT Server and LAN Manager servers with NetWare 4.1. "We were having enormous difficulty with our NT and LAN Manager network -- servers were locking up daily, domains were an administrative nightmare, and we were having to manage too many servers," said Jet Guilaran, LAN Analyst with INTELSAT. "NetWare 4.1 offered what NT and LAN Manager couldn't -- a hierarchical directory service that provides a single, central point of network administration as well as disk management and file ownership that has saved our company considerable time and money. And because of NetWare's performance and capacity, we were able to consolidate our 62 Microsoft servers down to just 16 NetWare 4.1 servers."

In addition, customers are turning to NetWare 4.1 for its superior Windows desktop integration, led by the recent release of the Client 32 for Windows 95. It is estimated that more than a half-million customers have downloaded the new client from Novell's WWW site (http://www.novell.com), CompuServe and replicated ftp sites worldwide over the last 30 days.
