Novell Announces First Electronic Tool
To Determine Return on Investment for IT Certification
Novell Authorized CNE Advisor Assigns Bottom#Line Value to Novell
Certifications
LAS VEGAS, Nev., NetWorld + Interop Booth -3965 -- April 3, 1996 --
Novell today rolled out its Novell Authorized CNE Advisor, the
first software tool to quantify the return on investment (ROI) that
organizations achieve by certifying their network support
professionals. The release of the Novell Authorized CNE Advisor
complements today's announcement of Novell's delivery of the Novell
Business Advisor software ROI tool as well as the release of ROI
research from International Data Corp. (IDC) showing that Novell's
NetWare® 4.1, GroupWise® and ManageWise® significantly improve
business productivity while cutting the costs of using network
technology.
The value of Novell's CNE, Master CNE and Certified Novell
Administrator (CNA) certifications is readily recognized and
well-quantified by industry and Novell data showing that companies
rely on Novell®certified individuals globally to support and
administer their networks, as well as use Novell certification as a
criterion for hiring, "raising" and promoting employees. The Novell
Authorized CNE Advisor lets managers recreate -- in terms of
computing and human resources -- their information technology (IT)
environments online. The tool then calculates (in U.S. dollars or
more than 60 global monetary units), the expected ROI from Novell
technical certifications.
"The beauty of this tool is that it can be used by managers or
employees to explore the bottom-line benefits of Novell®certified
support to their organizations," said Jerry S. Christensen, vice
president of marketing for Novell Education.
Default parameter values are based on research from IDC and
Strategic Research Corp. While based on industry research, the Novell
Authorized CNE Advisor is also flexible and customizable. The tool was
developed for Novell by Interpose Inc.
Novell Authorized CNE Advisor Endorsements: Aetna, ITTA, NAECs
According to Karen Kocher, manager of information technology and
training for Hartford, Conn.-based Aetna Life and Casualty, the
Novell Authorized CNE Advisor provides powerful business rationale
for companies to invest time and money to certify their support
professionals. "For companies, it boils down to how much is going to
be saved and how this will affect their bottom line," Kocher said.
"The tool demonstrates to management [that] they will receive a
return on their investment with people who are Novell-certified."
"The tool is what the industry has needed for a long time," said
Doug McBride, executive director of the Austin, Texas-based
Information Technology Training Association (ITTA). McBride praised
Novell for being the first to market with the tool, and noted that
development of an ROI tool has been the number-one request ITTA has
from its membership.
"This is a progressive move on Novell's part," said Mark Lamberth,
executive vice president of Nashville, Tenn.-based Athena Learning
Centers. Lamberth provided copies of the tool to four of his NAEC
sites, who had nothing but praise for the tool.
ROI Tool Defined
The Novell Authorized CNE Advisor helps managers and CNEs quantify
the value ofcertification to an organization through four sections:
Benefits of Certification, Return on Investment Analysis, Create a
CNE Roadmap and Exploring Further.
The Return on Investment Analysis is a key element of the tool. By
prompting users for answers to some basic questions, the tool breaks
down the analysis into three topics: pre-Novell certification,
certification process, and post-Novell certification. Pre- and
post-Novell certification environments compare the savings in
support and downtime reduction.
Availability
The Novell Authorized CNE Advisor is available immediately on the
Novell Education website (http://education.novell.com), and will be
available free of charge late April at Novell Authorized Education
Centers (NAECs) worldwide. To contact NAECs in their area, customers
can call 1-800-233-EDUC inside the U.S., or 801-222-7800 worldwide.

Investments; Novell NetWare 4.1: Reducing Cost of Ownership; Novell
ManageWise: Maximizing Returns on Networking Investments; and
Maximizing Return-on-Investment of Network Computing (a summary of
