Novell, IBM Unveil New LAN-to-Host Connectivity Product
For AS/400 Customers
NetWare for SAA: AS/400 Edition Offers Cost-Effective Solution
Optimized for AS/400s
OREM, Utah and RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. -- April 9,
1996 -- Novell, Inc. and IBM Corp. today announced the availability of
NetWare for SAA: AS/400 Edition, a new LAN-to-host connectivity
software product specifically designed to meet the needs of AS/400 and
NetWare users. By networking AS/400 systems to NetWare Local Area
Networks (LANs), users can cost-effectively leverage and integrate PC
applications, AS/400 applications and NetWare services into a single,
heterogeneous environment.
The new product is the first offering from the September 1995
Novell/IBM alliance created to provide Novell and IBM customers with
best-of-breed solutions for connecting NetWare LANs and host systems
using Systems Network Architecture (SNA). Through this alliance,
customers gain access to advanced products and technologies directly
from the originators of NetWare, SNA and the AS/400.
NetWare for SAA: AS/400 Edition, based on industry-leading
NetWare for SAA 2.0, was developed by Novell and IBM specifically for
AS/400 sites with up to 200 users. NetWare for SAA: AS/400 Edition is
the first product optimized specifically to integrate AS/400 systems with
NetWare networks, enabling users to more easily access applications
and data from all network resources. For example, by networking an
AS/400 to a NetWare LAN, users can integrate data from a customized
business application, such as a general ledger, residing on the AS/400
with a word processing or spreadsheet application on their desktop
computer -- saving time and resources.
"NetWare for SAA: AS/400 Edition provides users with an easy,
tailored solution for accessing and integrating important business
applications residing on multiple platforms -- another step in enabling
network-centric computing," said Lois Dimpfel, vice president of
networking software in IBM's Software Group. "This new product allows
customers to immediately realize the benefits of integrating Netware
LANs and AS/400 networks."
Cost-Effective Solution for AS/400 Sites
NetWare for SAA: AS/400 Edition is a cost-effective solution,
offering concurrent user-based licensing. As a result, users can access
information as often as needed with no limit to the number of sessions a
user can have.
"The availability of NetWare for SAA: AS/400 Edition is a huge
win for our customers who will value the tailored, cost-effective solution
and easy-to-use features inherent in this product," said Tom Steding,
vice president and general manager of Novell's Communications
Infrastructure Division. "Additionally, this product furthers our initiative to
address the needs of AS/400 sites who must protect their technology
investments with solutions that leverage their existing network
infrastructure."
Seamless Network Administration and Management
NetWare for SAA: AS/400 Edition offers users comprehensive
host connectivity without unnecessary complexity. The product is a set
of NetWare Loadable Modules (NLMs) providing automatic integration
with NetWare administration, directory, security and management
services.
"Installing NetWare for SAA: AS/400 Edition was so easy and
fast -- it took me half the time it typically takes to install and configure
products like this," said Darryl Meidinger of Border States Electric Supply,
a NetWare for SAA: AS/400 beta customer. "I know when I implement
LAN-to-host connectivity products from IBM and Novell, I'm getting the
most advanced and reliable solutions to meet my specific AS/400 and
NetWare needs."
NetWare for SAA: AS/400 Edition integrates with Novell's
industry-leading NetWare Directory Services (NDS) found in NetWare 4,
offering users one central point to log into all authorized network
services and resources. Similarly, for sites with more than one AS/400,
network administrators can configure any NetWare for SAA: AS/400
Edition server in the NDS tree through a single login -- eliminating the
need to log in to each individual AS/400 gateway on the network.
NetWare for SAA: AS/400 Edition enables network administrators
to analyze usage trends, and to configure, monitor and maintain multiple
NetWare for SAA: AS/400 Edition servers over local or wide area
network connections from their Windows desktop. In addition, network
managers can administer and manage the network through the same
network management consoles used to manage NetWare, offering a
centralized point for all network administration.
To further simplify the configuration and administration of the
network, NetWare for SAA: AS/400 Edition supports 5250 terminal
emulators and the full set of services for AS/400 Client Access and PC
Support applications, such as shared folders or virtual print. Additionally,
DOS and Microsoft Windows workstations can connect to NetWare for
SAA: AS/400 Edition servers using TCP/IP or IPX/SPX protocols over any
NetWare-supported topology.
Pricing and Availability
NetWare for SAA: AS/400 Edition, which includes the runtime
versions of NetWare 4.1 and 3.12, is available today worldwide through
