Novell Hosts 800 Girls for 1996 Take Our Daughters to Work Day

Sponsorship underscores Company's Commitment to Children

Orem, Utah -- April 24, 1996 -- In an effort to build self esteem in girls and introduce them to interesting careers, Novell will welcome 120 girls to its Fortune Drive campus for the fourth annual Take Our Daughters to Work Day Thursday, April 25 beginning at 8:30 a.m. Nationwide, the company will host a total of 800 girls, including participants from a local homeless shelter, and the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Clara County.

"Novell sponsors Take Our Daughters to Work Day because we want girls to be exposed to career opportunities they may have traditionally not pursued," said Linda Linfield, senior manager of Novell Community Relations. "We want girls to stay in school and gain confidence in the abilities to plan for the future."

According to the Ms. Foundation for Women, which conceived the idea and spearheads the annual Take Our Daughters to Work Day celebration, "Girls are the up-and-coming generation of women who will help to shape public life and policy in your neighborhood and across the nation . . . at any age they can make a big difference."

Novell volunteers throughout the company, both men and women, are making this event a reality for the third consecutive year. A core team has worked after hours and on weekends to plan a meaningful day for the girls, and more than 40 volunteers will serve in San Jose as hosts of the event. Novell Chief Operating Officer Mary Burnside will welcome the girls to work, and Sharkie, mascot of the San Jose Sharks, will entertain participants during lunch.

Novell has received positive feedback from participants in the 1994 and 1995 events, including reports from several girls inspired by the program to aim higher in their educational and career goals. As a result of participating in Novell's event last year, at least three girls reconsidered their decisions to drop out of school and went back to school, one earning her GED. Two of the girls also convinced their boyfriends to return to school.
