Novell Announces New Pricing Model for GroupWise
Competitive Per-User Pricing Makes GroupWise more Affordable
and Offers more Core Components in a Single Package
OREM, Utah -- May 7, 1996 -- Novell, Inc. today
announced that pricing for its GroupWise messaging system is moving to
a per-user model, making it easier to buy, sell and design GroupWise
solutions. Per-user pricing means that organizations simply total the
number of users on the system and purchase the corresponding number
of mailbox licenses. In addition, a number of components that were
formerly sold separately will be combined and included in a new core
product package, resulting in the most cost-effective messaging solution
on the market. Per-user pricing takes effect June 1, 1996.
Historically, Novell has priced components for its GroupWise components
in one of three ways: clients were priced per user, message servers
were priced per server and gateways were priced per site. This
resulted in a somewhat complex pricing model that had two major
drawbacks: it made it confusing to purchase GroupWise, and the pricing
scheme often put smaller customers at a pricing disadvantage when
purchasing gateway or server products.
For example, under the old pricing model, a small business with 25 users
that wanted to purchase a GroupWise system with an NLM message
server would have spent $10,639. But, with the new per-user pricing
model, that same business now will spend only $3,840. Novell also has
incorporated economies of scale into the per-user pricing model, which
means that larger, distributed configurations also will save when
compared with the old model.
"As the leader in collaborative computing, Novell prides itself on providing
cost-effective messaging solutions for organizations of all sizes, from
small entrepreneurial businesses to the largest enterprises," said
Stewart Nelson, vice president and general manager of Novell's
GroupWare Division. "Regardless of platform preference or installation
size, users worldwide will be able to take advantage of our new uniform
pricing model and enhanced core package.
"This model also will give current and future versions of GroupWise a
competitive edge in the messaging and groupware marketplace."
The new core package, also referred to as the GroupWise Mailbox, will
include the following components on a single CD-ROM in all available
languages: Client/Admin (Windows, DOS, Macintosh and UNIX), Message
Server, Integration Module for NetWare Administrator, Async (remote)
Gateway, API Gateway, X.25 Gateway, MHS Gateway, List Server,
GroupWise Enhancement Pack, and migration utilities for Microsoft Mail
and MHS.
An example of how these components will benefit users is the
Enhancement Pack, which includes features such as automatic spell
check, message conversion, signatures, schedule checking and
message threading.
