Take a Place in the Human Race
Walk, Jog, Stroll or Roll in First-of-Its-Kind Fund Raiser for Local
Charities
OREM, Utah -- May 2, 1996 -- Hundreds of Utah Valley
residents are expected to converge on the Novell Orem campus to join
The Human Race in an effort to raise money for their favorite charities on
Saturday, May 11 at 8 a.m.
The first fundraiser of its type in Utah, The Human Race is supported by
some of the valley's most prominent organizations including Novell, Nu
Skin, The Daily Herald and the United Way Volunteer Center. Several
local companies are helping their employees get started by underwriting
$5 - $35 in pledges.
"Novell gets countless calls from worthy organizations that would like us
to participate in fundraising walk-a-thons, jog-a-thons, ride-a-thons, and
jazzercize events," said Linda Linfield, senior manager, Novell Community
Relations. "The Human Race is a single event through which the
company can assist all the charities our employees believe to be
important -- organizations that we might not otherwise be able to assist."
According to John Petersen, manager, Nu Skin Community Relations,
"The Human Race is the right approach for Nu Skin because it presents
the opportunity for employees and their families to work together for the
good of our Utah Valley community, and offers the company the
opportunity to be involved in this type of activity on a grand scale once a
year."
Employer enthusiasm was the main reason the United Way Volunteer
Center became involved in The Human Race.
"Already 35 nonprofit organizations are listed as participating charities
for the 1996 event," said Bill Hulterstrom, president, United Way of Utah
County. "Employer-led fundraising activities to benefit local nonprofit
agencies are yet another terrific way to involve area residents in meeting
the needs of our community."
The Human Race allows people to walk, run, roll or stroll along a 5K
wheelchair-accessible course, and participants are encouraged to bring
along family members and friends. Anyone who collects at least $35 in
pledges will receive The Human Race T-shirt, and those who collect $75
will receive The Human Race sweatshirt. Door prizes will be given away
after the Race, and the individuals who raise the most money overall will
receive one of several grand prizes.
Each participant needs to obtain The Human Race official pledge form,
which may be picked up from participating employers or at the United
Way Volunteer Center, 148 N. 100 West, Provo. For more information,
call the United Way Volunteer Center at 374-8108.
