Novell Ships GroupWise 5 Customer Beta

GroupWise First to Expand Universal Mail Box to Include Document Management

OREM, Utah -- June 3, 1996 -- Novell, Inc. today announced that it has reached the next milestone in the GroupWise 5 beta cycle. This milestone represents the first full-featured beta of the product, which is designed for customer implementation and feedback. Previously referred to by its code-name, GroupWise XTD, GroupWise 5 is an expanded client/server E-mail system that is the first in the industry to include full document management capabilities as part of a new Universal Mail Box. Building on its predecessor, GroupWise 4.1, GroupWise 5 also seamlessly integrates calendaring/scheduling, task management, shared folders, conferencing, workflow and access to the World Wide Web into the Universal Mail Box.

"Currently, more than 6 million people have selected GroupWise as their messaging solution, and the numbers are growing," said Stewart Nelson, vice president and general manager of Novell's GroupWare Division. "GroupWise 5 offers an excellent upgrade path to our existing customers, as well as an ideal solution for those organizations looking to expand beyond their current E-mail capabilities. Customers know that when they invest in GroupWise, they're getting nearly a decade of experience in messaging software development."

As part of the GroupWise 5 development process, Novell conducted research to identify the activities that people do in the course of their jobs and to study how people communicate and access information.

"We found that most workers spend a large part of their workday in E-mail and are most comfortable working in that environment," Nelson said. "Therefore, all of the capabilities of GroupWise 5, such as document management, calendaring/scheduling and task management, are found in the Universal Mail Box, and all of the information contained in that environment can be accessed and managed in the same way. Our philosophy is simple: if your organization can use E-mail, then it can use GroupWise."

According to a recent WorkGroup Computing Report by the Patricia Seybold Group, a Boston, Mass., analyst firm, the key advantage of GroupWise 5 is the Universal Mail Box -- a comfortable and flexible environment that allows users to access all of the information they typically need to conduct business and do their jobs.

"Novell has done an excellent job of anticipating how people work and how they want to manage that work," said Ronni Marshak, editor-in-chief of the report. "We are impressed with the functionality and usability of GroupWise (5). The product lives up to its promise of a single, comfortable work space for doing individual, group and enterprise work."

When developing GroupWise 5, Novell integrated the powerful document management technology of SoftSolutions (Novell's standalone document management application) and the message store of GroupWise into a messaging-based information management solution unparalleled in the computing industry. As a result, users now have one point from which they can create, view, edit and manage information, as well as communicate and share that information.

GroupWise 5 adds full attribution to all GroupWise objects, allowing users to perform a single server-based search on all related information wherever it may be stored (i.e. documents, messages, attachments, schedule or calendar events, the World Wide Web, personal or shared folders, etc.). In addition, GroupWise 5 offers full check-in/check-out (for single documents, single folders, multiple folders, selected documents from a single folder or selected documents from multiple folders), concurrency control and versioning.

"Novell has done the best job of all the major groupware providers in integrating document and object management seamlessly into a work environment," Marshak said. "We believe that document management is a key technology for supporting strategic group work, and we are therefore very pleased to see the prominent positioning of document management within GroupWise (5)."

With the shipment last week of the customer beta, GroupWise 5 remains on target for a late summer delivery. For more information about GroupWise, customers can call 1-800-638-9273 or visit Novell's home page at http://www.novell.com/groupwise/.
