Novell Comes to Aid of Homeless Women, Children After San Jose Shelter Burns to Ground

Software Company Urges Others to Act Quickly in Response to Local Emergency

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- June 3, 1996 -- Novell, the world's leading network software provider, was the first company to pledge help for women displaced after the Commercial Street homeless shelter burned to the ground early Friday morning. The blaze killed a five-month-old and critically injured one adult woman.

"Novell responded immediately to take care of the urgent needs of 47 women and children who lost all of their possessions in the fire," said Christine Burroughs, Executive Director of InnVision of Santa Clara Valley, which operates six area shelters including the burned-out Commercial Street shelter. "We appreciate Novell employees for taking quick action to alleviate the suffering and loss experienced by women who have nowhere to turn for help."

The company committed to purchase beds and bedding to replace what was lost and has started a drive to obtain toiletry items, diapers, bottled water and juices, cleaning supplies, and employee contributions.

"Novell employees are deeply saddened by this tragedy," said Heather Pastorini, Novell manager of community relations. "We are trying to help InnVision meet this pressing need, and we hope other local companies and individuals will see the tremendous need and respond generously."

Before the fire, the Commercial Street Shelter was the only shelter in Santa Clara County dedicated to serving single women and their children. The women are temporarily being housed at the Georgia Travis Center, a day shelter operated by InnVision to provide day care and job training skills to homeless women.

Those interested in contributing funds toward a new shelter facility or in donating linens, diapers, non-perishable food, and hygiene items may contact InnVision at 44 S. Fifth St. San Jose, Calif. 95112 or telephone (408) 292-4286.

InnVision, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, is San Jose's largest provider of direct shelter services for homeless women, children, men and the mentally ill. The organization is highly recognized for its effective approach to homeless issues in Santa Clara County. Last year alone, InnVision offered direct services to more than 8,900 individuals and provided more than 195,000 meals to homeless or at-risk people.
