Internet/Intranet
OREM, Utah -- June 10, 1996 -- Novell, Inc. today
announced the expansion of its worldwide programs for certified
education of technical support professionals to include a new series of
courses and certifications focused on the Internet and intranets. The
Novell Internet Manager certification and associated courses will train
and certify individuals in job skills needed to leverage the full business
opportunity of the Internet and intranets, giving their businesses an
enduring competitive edge.
"The Novell Internet Manager certification will be to the Internet/intranet
what the Novell Authorized CNE is to business LANs and WANs--the
global standard for service and support," said Carolyn G. Rose, senior
vice president and general manager of Novell Education. Rose noted that
industry and Novell research show that CNE certification--the pioneer
end-user certification for the information technology industry--is used
globally as a standard for hiring individuals, and giving them raises and
promotions.
The Novell Internet Manager Inside
Novell's Internet Manager certification program prepares those commonly
referred to as "web masters" to manage the overall technical project of
running an Internet or intranet site. Sample job tasks covered in the
certification program include providing support, managing security,
performing capacity planning, and installing client/server applications for
the site, as well as a host of HTML tasks, including reading/writing HTML
and converting documents into HTML. An understanding of core Novell
technologies and solutions such as Novell Directory Services (NDS) and
the Novell Web Server is included.
The Novell Internet Manager consists of six courses and five
examinations. Four of the courses, including new
Internet/intranet-specific courses 652 Understanding and Applying
Internet Concepts and 654 Web Publishing and Authoring,
are already available through Novell Authorized Education Centers
(NAECs) around the world. Courses 656 Web Manager and 658
Advanced Web Manager are scheduled to be available in the fall.
Rounding out the curriculum are two core Novell courses, 520
NetWare 4 Administration and 605 NetWare TCP/IP
Transport, which will respectively prepare Novell Internet Managers
with the ability to link the Novell Web Server with NDS, and will provide
them with an understanding of connectivity options and issues.
Two of the five certification examinations are already available for
certification candidates. The additional examinations are scheduled to be
available by early fall. As with Novell's industry-pioneering and leading
Certified Novell Administrator (CNA), CNE, Master CNE and Certified
Novell Instructor (CNI) programs, all Novell Internet Manager examinations
will be offered worldwide at Sylvan Prometric testing centers.
Novell Internet Manager's Expanded Audience; CNEs, CNAs Also
Have Certification Path
"The Novell Internet Manager is the ideal certification opportunity for
technical managers new to certification," noted Rose. "Novell's existing
base of 400,000-plus certified individuals and those in progress can look
forward to specific Internet/intranet advanced certification programs,
which will be announced early this summer.
"The intranet is the next evolution of the LAN," she added. "The owners
of the more than 3.5 million Novell networks have already invested in 90
percent of the software infrastructure needed for intranet capability.
Novell CNEs and CNAs will have similar opportunity to leverage their
technical training and add intranet and Internet certification to the skill
sets and services they offer."
Novell Product Group, Netscape Perspectives on Certification
"Our new Novell Internet Manager certification and courses are
significant components of Novell's overall Internet/intranet solution," said
Tammy Baker, vice president and general manager of the Internet
Commerce Division of Novell. "By providing our customers and education
partners with the comprehensive, industry-leading training Novell is
known for, coupled with the leading-edge products we offer, Novell is
creating a complete Internet/intranet solution that is unmatched in the
industry."
Novell also announced it plans to work with Netscape Communications
Corp. to develop Internet-based training modules. "Netscape is pleased to
work with Novell in developing and deploying a common subset of
courses and exams as part of Novell's training and certification
environment," said Todd Rulon-Miller, senior vice president of worldwide
sales, support and professional services at Netscape. "By combining our
Internet/intranet expertise with Novell's training and certification
leadership, we can explore advanced techniques for delivering exam
preparation and self-assessment over the Internet."
Customer Support for New Certification
"Novell has taken an excellent approach to this training," said Mark
Dunlap, network manager with Buffalo General Hospital, a
4,300-employee hospital in Buffalo, N.Y. "From our experience using the
Novell Web Server, I understand there are very specific Internet and
intranet job tasks. Identifying them, and then training individuals to be able
to do these tasks is very valuable. I value Novell certification in that it
indicates a degree of discipline and commitment to pursue further
education." Dunlap plans to have several of the hospital's 60 support
professionals complete Novell Internet Manager training to gain similar
benefits that the hospital has realized from CNE and CNA training.
"The Novell Internet Manager certification is a great foundational
program," noted Rick Maw, president of Network Publishing Inc., a Provo,
Utah-based service bureau providing Internet consulting, design,
development and hosting services. "One of the issues we have is
making sure that we hire individuals who are capable of mastering
cutting-edge technologies. The Novell Internet Manager provides a good
balance of the specifics of Novell's technologies and general skills
needed to do the job." Network Publishing's client sites include
Volkswagen, EMI Music Publishers and the Smithsonian Innovation
Awards.
