Novell Announces Intranet and Internet Future for
ManageWise
OREM, Utah -- June 24, 1996 -- Novell today
announced its vision for the future of its ManageWise PC LAN
management solution. Over the next year, ManageWise will become
platform-independent through support of Java technology and the
Internet infrastructure. These enhanced products will enable network
administrators to perform management tasks from any intranet and
Internet location through World Wide Web-based management consoles.
In addition, ManageWise will provide increased scalability through
integrated support for Novell Directory Services (NDS),
Novell's industry-standard global directory services. NDS support will
allow users to consolidate management information for easier site-level
administration and reporting. These enhancements, slated for the first
half of 1997, are part of Novell's commitment to provide customers with
management services that can be distributed across any platform on
private and public networks.
"Novell will continue its investment in cross-platform network services,"
said Steve Markman, executive vice president and general manager of
Novell Products Group. "Through NDS capabilities and Java
enhancements, ManageWise will be clearly positioned to take advantage
of the Internet and provide IS administrators with next-generation
cross-platform management services."
"ManageWise is already accepted as the first integrated management
solution for PC LAN networks," said Prem Uppaluru, vice president and
general manager of Novell's Management Products Division. "These
enhancements will solidify that leadership position by demonstrating our
commitment to customers' interest in simplifying management through
cross-platform tools."
Cross-Platform Management and Simplified Access to
Network Information
The future version of the ManageWise solutions will be based on Java
technology that will simplify PC LAN management by enabling network
administrators to quickly and easily connect to network information
through any desktop Web browser. ManageWise applications performing
management tasks, including those of traffic monitoring and real-time
server statistics gathering, will be written in Java and stored as applets
so that users will be able to access them from any server. These
platform-independent tools will not only improve the efficiency of
in-house network administration, but will also enable service providers to
remotely manage networks over secure Internet services such as those
run by Novell's NetWare Connect Services (NCS) partners.
Future Java-based versions of ManageWise will significantly speed the
collection of and access to cross-platform network information by
providing integrated support for NDS. As a common framework unifying
access to NetWare, Unix and Windows NT servers, NDS will serve as a
central business object repository for all network resources and
devices. ManageWise will populate this data store with hardware and
software inventory, as well as topology information. Then, through the
Java-based infrastructure, multiple users will be able to more easily
access this information and related fault conditions through any
management console regardless of platform.
Tighter Integration and Accelerated Development
Demonstrating its commitment to the ManageWise product family, Novell
is bringing all ManageWise development in-house. Previously, Novell
shared ManageWise development with Intel Corporation. Now, Novell is
moving ManageWise forward by licensing Intel Corporation's most recent
desktop management technology, including the remote control, hardware
and software inventory, file transfer, chat and virus protection
capabilities historically found in ManageWise. Novell will continue to
advance these features in future versions of ManageWise and will
provide even tighter integration among the product family's broad range
of management capabilities. Novell will also consolidate users' service
and support requirements through Novell channels. To realize these
goals, Novell and Intel will work closely together over the next several
months to provide a seamless development transition transparent to
ManageWise customers.
"Customers are asking for even tighter integration among the different
functions of ManageWise," said Prem Uppaluru, vice president and
general manager of Novell's Management Products Division. "To fulfill
these requests, we are consolidating our internal and external
engineering efforts under one umbrella. We'll continue to fully support our
customers during this transition."
