Novell ManageWise Delivers Cross-Platform Management Services

IS Professionals Can Now Manage Mixed NT and NetWare Servers, All Major PC Platforms and Software Assets With One Integrated Solution

OREM, Utah -- June 24, 1996 -- Novell, Inc. today announced significant enhancements to its ManageWise™ family of management solutions, delivering on the company's commitment to provide its customers with cross-platform network services. Novell introduced ManageWise 2.1 and a new ManageWise Agent for Windows NT Server to let network administrators manage mixed NetWare® and Windows NT environments. In addition, ManageWise 2.1 adds support for Windows 95 and OS/2 WARP clients, enabling network administrators to manage all major client and server systems within their PC LANs from a single management console. Novell also outlined its software management solution to address software access, control and deployment out to the networked desktop. These enhancements make the ManageWise product family the most comprehensive integrated management solution for heterogeneous PC network environments.

"Novell is committed to providing cross-platform services that seamlessly connect and manage our customers' mixed PC LAN environments to give them better access to network services and resources," said Prem Uppaluru, vice president and general manager of Novell's Management and Administration Division. "ManageWise delivers on this promise by helping IS managers unify their mixed NetWare and NT environments to provide a comprehensive PC LAN management solution."

"The ability to manage other platforms from a single ManageWise console is ideal," said Simon Taufique, a network administrator at New York University who provides support for a mixed network of four NetWare servers, one NT Server and approximately 200 users. "We want them all tied into the same management environment, and the ability to see NetWare and Windows NT Servers all working together is a great benefit. ManageWise saves hours per day in travel time to remote sites, which translates into significant cost savings."

Easy and Proactive Windows NT Server Management

ManageWise Agent for Windows NT Server integrates with ManageWise 2.1 to provide a standards-based, feature-rich solution to trend server performance, detect fault conditions and monitor Windows NT server configurations. IS managers can now leverage a single ManageWise 2.1 graphical user interface (GUI) to manage both NetWare and Windows NT Servers, eliminating the need to learn two separate network management systems. ManageWise communicates both NetWare and Windows NT Server management information via the industry-standard simple network management protocol (SNMP), allowing enterprise administrators to manage their PC LAN environment from their enterprise consoles. For those small business managers who need to outsource their management requirements, ManageWise 2.1 is also optimized to work over phone lines to deliver NetWare and Windows NT management information remotely in a proactive manner.

The Windows NT Server agent extends ManageWise 2.1 capabilities, enabling IS managers to proactively manage NT Servers by collecting real-time and long-term performance trends and alarm information for an instantaneous understanding of unusual conditions and changing environments. It provides monitoring of all useful server statistics, including disk I/O, memory, CPU utilization, loaded software, network adapters and print queues to help network managers prevent downtime. NT Servers are discovered and automatically placed in the ManageWise topology map so administrators can comprehensively document and troubleshoot their heterogeneous PC networks.

Flexible Software Management

As part of the ManageWise product family, Novell provides software management that extends beyond the physical deployment of software to users. Novell's NetWare Application Launcher™ (NAL) empowers administrators to better control a company's software assets, while offering end users the freedom of software access from anywhere on their corporate networks. Using NetWare Application Launcher with Novell Directory Services™ (NDS™), administrators can assign applications by user, user group or organization and have appropriate applications dynamically appear on users' desktops. Software assignment can be done once for a company group or department so that current and future members of this group will gain automatic access to a standard desktop configuration. Now, the end user can have access to all applications assigned to him or her while administrators can easily support this demand from their management console.

The NetWare Application Launcher lets the network administrator physically distribute software out to the desktop through automated installations, or enable users to pull applications to their desktop by providing them with setup programs. For large multi-server environments, Novell will enhance NetWare Application Launcher with scaleable, server-to-server software distribution.

End-to-End Management Solution

ManageWise is the only comprehensive end-to-end network management solution increasing network reliability and performance while boosting end-user and overall business productivity. In addition to enabling the management of heterogeneous server environments, ManageWise provides a combination of remote control, hardware and software inventory, virus detection, file transfer and configuration change management capabilities with networked desktops. ManageWise enables administrators to manage multiple desktop systems including DOS, Macintosh, OS/2 2.1, Windows 3.1 and 3.11. ManageWise 2.1 now supports O/S2 WARP and Windows 95 desktops. Novell will update ManageWise 2. 1 to manage Windows NT clients later this year.
