World's Leading Office Products Manufacturers Now Shipping Devices with Novell Embedded Systems Technology (NEST)

More than One Million NEST-Enabled Product Units to Ship by End of 1996

Business Technology Expo, LAS VEGAS -- July 10, 1996 -- Novell, Inc. today announced that the world's leading manufacturers of copiers, fax machines, printers and scanners are now shipping office products enabled with Novell Embedded Systems Technology (NEST), Novell's technology for connecting virtually any intelligent device into distributed business networks, corporate intranets and the Internet. NEST makes it easy and cost-effective for Novell OEMs to incorporate network connectivity into office equipment and other intelligent devices that can be accessed and controlled from anywhere on the network and managed from a central location.

Novell, which makes NEST available to OEMs in a software development kit, now expects over one million NEST-enabled devices to be in use by the end of 1996. Altogether, over 200 NEST-enabled products are currently being developed.

"By providing NEST to our OEMs we enable companies to unleash the power of their networks," said John Harris, director of business development for Novell's Extended Networks Division. "Incorporating NEST into office products enables our partners to maintain a competitive advantage by providing industry-leading network capabilities to their customers."

"Partnering with Novell has provided Digital Products, Inc. (DPI) with access to leading- edge networking technology," said Neil Peterson, vice president of OEM for Digital Products, Inc., a leading provider of Ethernet and Token-Ring LAN-based print servers. "DPI was one of the first printer-based suppliers to ship NEST. Since then, our OEMs have increasingly expressed interest in NEST and in incorporating it into their products."

"Embedding NEST enables us to offer our customers products with sophisticated inbound and outbound fax addressing," says John Biancamano, product manager for Ricoh Corporation, Inc.'s partnership with Novell. "It allows a user to send a fax to a NetWare network and have the fax routed directly to the recipient's PC or to a specific printer or digital copier on the network."

NEST includes integration with Novell Directory Services (NDS), Novell's industry- standard global directory for naming, finding, managing and securing information across private networks, intranets and the Internet. NDS provides network administrators with a central view of the entire network, offering an efficient way to manage devices distributed across multiple sites and remote locations. For example, a network administrator at a central help desk can remotely add devices to the network, establish user access and permissions and troubleshoot problems.

Companies incorporating NEST into their office products include:

Andover Controls Lantronix
