New Tools in "Green River" Release of NetWare 4 Extend Novell's Lead in Network Administration and Management

Updated NWAdmin Utility Reduces Network Ownership Costs through Faster, Easier Management

OREM, Utah -- July 10, 1996 -- Novell, Inc. today announced network administration tools in the upcoming "Green River" release of NetWare 4® that extend the company's lead in making networks easier to manage and more affordable to own and operate. Green River's enhanced NetWare Administrator™ (NWAdmin™) tool provides administrators with a graphical window into the network that speeds and streamlines network management, provides customizable administration interfaces, and works with Novell Directory Services™ (NDS™) to enable a higher degree of control over users and resources on distributed business networks, corporate intranets, and the Internet.

"Green River's NWAdmin makes my job at least ten times easier and faster," said Boyd Wilson, LAN administrator at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. "It is packed full of many new and advanced features and benefits including the ability to create multiple user templates, the ability to change properties of multiple objects, and an easy snap-in interface for an additional NDS management tool. Now I can spend more time researching and developing new technologies for my users, which I enjoy the most."

"Our customers told us they wanted easier network administration, so we designed the Green River release of NetWare to really simplify ongoing management of network resources," said William Donahoo, senior director of product marketing at Novell. "With the 32-bit NWAdmin tool, Green River helps network administrators create and manage networks that can more readily adapt and grow with their companies' businesses which helps reduce the overall cost of network ownership."

Faster, More Efficient Network Administration

Green River's NWAdmin enhancements simplify network management and reduce cost of ownership by enabling Novell customers to:

  • Set and change multiple user, network and directory objects, cutting network management time;
  • Simultaneously manage multiple directory tree structures, reducing redundant management tasks;
  • Easily rename a directory tree to better match an organization's growth and development structure;
  • Print the directory tree structure for a better understanding of logical network design; and
  • Extend NWAdmin to manage third-party applications and NDS objects.
Other features include:
  • A configurable toolbar easing access to frequently used menu items;
  • Support for Windows 95 in addition to Windows 3.1 desktops, providing administrators with their desktop platform of choice; and
  • 32-bit support for faster performance to further cut valuable network management time.

Integration with other Novell Management Tools

NWAdmin works with Novell management solutions - including the ManageWise network management solution and the NetWare Application Launcher™ utility in Green River - to enable administrators to manage a broad range of network-based systems and events. ManageWise, available separately, is integrated with Green River and provides capabilities such as mapping, virus detection, remote control, hardware and software inventory control and file transfer and configuration change management. NetWare Application Launcher, included in Green River, is a graphical tool that provides LAN administrators with centralized control of network applications. This control allows administrators to provide users with consistent access to applications regardless of where they log into their networks.

Support for Custom and Third-Party Applications

The enhanced version of NWAdmin includes applications that snap into the utility, making it easier for administration to configure and customize their network management systems. For example, the NetWare Registry Database (NRD) provides administrators with fast access to configuration information stored in NDS. Using Novell application programming interfaces (APIs), customers can develop additional customized applications that snap in to NW Admin to better meet their solutions requirements.

About NDS

NWAdmin is the global management tool for NDS, the universal directory for finding and managing network-based information and references. NDS is a hierarchial, object-oriented and extensible system that makes it easy for administrators to organize management information and locate it from anywhere on the network. It is the only directory service that supports third-party snap-in applications. Through support for open Internet technology standards, NDS will enable customers to preserve existing network investments while integrating emerging technologies into intranet solutions.
