Novell Includes Web Server in "Green River" -- Open Beta Starts
Today
Novell Drives Evolution of the Network Operating System to the
Intranet With Enhanced NetWare 4
OREM, Utah -- August 6, 1996 -- Novell today
announced open beta availability of NetWare® 4.11, the next
version of its market-leading NetWare 4 network operating system
(NOS), previously code-named Green River. NetWare 4.11 now features
Novell's high-performance NetWare Web Server 2.5, a NetBasic
scripting tool for creating intranet applications that can access Novell
Directory Services (NDS) and Oracle databases, and other
Internet technologies to provide a complete intranet solution. Millions of
Novell users will be able to extend their existing network infrastructure
into intranets, connecting them with more of the information and
resources they need and giving their businesses an enduring competitive
edge. Moreover, new users in businesses of all sizes will be able to
deploy intranets and software developers will be able to create intranet
applications based on NetWare, the industry's most cost-effective and
reliable network platform. The NetWare 4.11 open beta software is
currently available by registering through Novell's World Wide Web site at
http://netware.novell.com/river/ or by calling 1-800-200-9140 or 1-512-434-1564.
With NetWare 4.11's inclusion of NetWare Web Server, NDS, TCP/IP with
dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) support, enhanced security
and NetBasic, a Visual Basic-compatible scripting interpreter, developers
and administrators familiar with Visual Basic will be able to easily build
intranet applications and deploy intranet solutions based on NetWare.
Developers can now build dynamic HTML pages and sites which access
Oracle databases or Novell services allowing end users to securely
access, share and publish information across the Internet and intranets.
"With the release of NetWare 4.11, the NOS has evolved into the intranet
" said William Donahoo, senior director of product marketing at Novell.
"While other companies talk about the intranet and the services users
need to build one, Novell delivers a comprehensive intranet platform
including file and print, security, directory, management, messaging and
Web services. We're providing an open beta release of NetWare for the
first time to give our customers early access to these new capabilities
and to help assist Novell to deliver a more reliable, solid final release."
Novell anticipates and is prepared to support strong demand -- up to
70,000 copies -- for its first open beta software delivery of NetWare.
Although the software is not available for download from the Internet or
Novell on-line forums, interested customers can register through the Web
or by calling one of the two phone numbers provided. The timing of this
open beta will allow customers to plan for, and realize the benefits of,
new NetWare 4.11 capabilities before the final product ships this fall.
Developers who received the beta version of NetWare 4.11 in the June
Novell Software Development Kit (SDK) are using this time to build
end-user and administrative applications.
Web Server Helps Enable Intranet/Internet Platform
NetWare Web Server software allows customers to utilize the NetWare
4 platform as the core of their internal and external Web sites. With its
inclusion in NetWare 4.11, end users will be able to more readily publish
and access information on corporate intranets and the Internet. NetWare
Web Server not only supports the NetBasic scripting engine, but also all
the common World Wide Web services -- Java applets, JavaScript, the
Remote Common Gateway Interface (R-CGI), the Local Common
Gateway Interface (L-CGI), access controls and logging, plus PERL
script interpreters. It is the only Web server that allows companies to
publish NDS information while enabling end users to browse the
directory for fast access to critical information about network users and
resources, including user names, e-mail addresses, Uniform Resources
Locators (URLs) and listings of a company's computers and applications.
In addition, NDS access controls -- based on IP addresses, user names,
host names, directory, document, users or groups -- allow administrators
to create a secure intranet by enabling them to manage end-user access
to specific Web documents.
Protocol Independence
With this version of NetWare, Novell provides the industry's most
comprehensive intranet infrastructure. In addition to IPX, full support of
TCP/IP with DHCP gives users the freedom to choose the best protocol to
run their networks and benefit from direct intranet and Internet
connections. Companies will also be able to install NetWare 4.11 and
leverage NDS, symmetric multiprocessing (SMP), C2-grade network
security and TCP/IP support to safely run and access critical applications
such as Oracle and Lotus Notes databases, leading messaging systems
including Novell GroupWise, search engines and other network
applications across corporate networks, intranets and the Internet.
New Development Tools and Licensing Features
This version of NetWare will provide new development and licensing
opportunities for Novell partners. The inclusion of NetBasic in NetWare
4.11 fulfills the latest step in Net2000, Novell's initiative to provide
developers with easy access to its network services for building
applications and components that can be managed and located across
networks, intranets and the Internet. For the first time, industry-standard
Basic scripting tools can be used to create applications executed by a
NetBasic interpreter integrated with NetWare. NetBasic lets developers
leverage their Visual Basic knowledge to build, manage and deploy
advanced intranet applications.
NetWare 4.11 also ships with NetBasic for the Internet, enabling a user
with any Web browser to access and execute Basic scripts running on
NetWare across the Internet. This allows automatic HTML page creation
through Basic scripts, remote access to NetWare services and system
administration tasks, as well as access to popular databases. Now
administrators can remotely access Novell's powerful NDS or NetWare
Administrator (NWAdmin) management tool using a
platform-independent Web browser.
"NetBasic, NDS and the NetWare Web Server embedded into 4.11 is the
perfect solution for our company's intranet needs," said Marvin Green,
senior network engineer for U.S. Bank Corporation. "Powerful intranet
applications are a strategic initiative for U.S. Bank and we have chosen
to deploy them on NetWare 4. We are currently planning on creating a
customized application with NetBasic that allows individual
administrators, at over 1000 branches, to recreate passwords. The
synergy of NetWare and NetBasic's easy scripting allows us to manage
our enterprise network of over 1000 servers with only a handful of
engineers -- this would simply be impossible without the rich functionality
and power NetBasic gives us to build utilities and applications for
NetWare."
NetWare 4.11 also ships with NetWare Licensing Services (NLS) to
enable organizations to track and monitor their use of LSAPI-enabled
licensed applications. Through its tight integration with NDS, NLS is the
only licensing service that can support enterprise networks. NLS also
allows developers to control how their applications are licensed and
used on the network.
NetWare 4.11 Availability and Features
