Novell's DeveloperNet Signs Up 3,000th Subscriber

Developer Relations Program Rapidly Gains Subscribers as Developers Utilize Network Services

OREM, Utah -- August 12, 1996 -- Less than a year since its inception, Novell's DeveloperNet subscription program today announced it has reached a significant milestone by signing its 3,000th subscriber. This triples the milestone of 1,000 subscribers set in January of this year and underscores the intense interest in developing applications and tools to NetWare™, the market-leading network operating system (NOS). This achievement also demonstrates the depth and breadth of applications being developed for NetWare, which include many applications utilizing network services such as Novell Directory Services (NDS™).

The 3,000th subscription went to Mike Rich, president of Media Computing, a software development company specializing in news graphics and election automation for the television industry. Media Computing's clients include the CBS Network, several ABC, NBC and FOX owned and operated television stations, the News Hour with Jim Lehrer and NewsSport, a sports news cable network.

"Our client base, the television news industry, is concerned with quick response for their incredibly tight deadlines," said Rich. "DeveloperNet's rich set of information and current software development kits empower us to develop more robust products which satisfy our customer demands. Novell's directory, authentication and verification network services offer us an amazing amount of functionality for our products."

"The interest in our DeveloperNet subscription program has been overwhelming, primarily the result of the tremendous business opportunity and technology leadership that Novell offers to the developer community," said Gary Mueller, vice president and general manager of Novell's Developer Services Division. "By providing a robust network application platform and easier access to Novell's advanced network services, Novell is in a unique position to empower developers to create and manage applications that reside on the network."

Net2000 Initiative

Net2000 is Novell's initiative to ease development to NetWare and to expose network services to developers everywhere. The first milestones of Net2000 were delivered this year at BrainShare, Novell's worldwide technical conference. Net2000 provides: 1) easier access to NetWare services such as Novell Directory Services, security and licensing through standard interfaces as Visual Basic, Delphi and OLE; 2) management and sharing of components (OLE™ controls and soon Java™ applets) across the network using the power of NDS; and 3) full Basic scripting capabilities to allow developers an easy way to build NetWare applications and utilities. The Net2000 initiative also embraces Java and extends networking capabilities to build network-aware applications for intranets. The NetWare Software Development Kit for the Java language will be available this fall to DeveloperNet subscribers.

Novell's DeveloperNet is a comprehensive subscription program for developers creating and optimizing applications that utilize Novell's networking services and enable client/network computing, an advanced computing paradigm that goes beyond desktop and client/server computing to give developers and users access to information components across global enterprise networks.

DeveloperNet Program

DeveloperNet is the primary channel for the delivery of Novell development tools, information and technical support to software developers. DeveloperNet subscribers receive a comprehensive set of information resources from Novell. Some of the tools include a choice of Novell's most current networking products and Novell SDK CD-ROMs. DeveloperNet subscribers also receive a subscription to Developer Notes, Novell's monthly technical journal with tips, code samples and general information for software developers working on network-integrated applications.

Technical support is available to DeveloperNet subscribers through Novell's developer-specific support organization tailored to meet the needs of software developers. DeveloperNet subscribers receive credits for one-on-one consultations with Developer Support Engineers, who will work with developers until their issues are resolved. In addition, DeveloperNet subscribers have access to the latest on-line resources for technical information, files, patches and more. DeveloperNet subscribers also can attend a number of developer's conferences and special interest group meetings, as well as BrainShare, to provide technical feedback throughout the year.
