Novell, Xerox and WhetStone Announce Imaging Solution For
GroupWise 5
GroupWise 5 to Provide Full Document and Image Management
Through Universal Mail Box
Orem, Utah -- August 21, 1996 -- Novell, Inc., Xerox
Desktop Document Systems and WhetStone Technologies today
announced a joint imaging technology development and marketing
agreement that will let Novell's 6.5 million GroupWise users
leverage the e-mail, document management and workflow features of
GroupWise for electronically scanned and stored images. The resulting
product, GroupWise Imaging, will allow users to view, store, edit and
route scanned image files across corporate networks and intranets via
the Universal Mail Box. With this agreement, Novell, Xerox and
WhetStone are the first companies to offer users "E-mail-enabled" image
management at the desktop.
"GroupWise Imaging succeeds in bridging the longstanding productivity
gap between electronic and paper documents, creating a single,
cost-effective environment in which users can leverage scanned
images," said Stewart Nelson, vice president and general manager of
Novell's GroupWare Division. "It is the inevitable extension of Novell's
vision to provide users with a Universal Mail Box where all information --
documents, E-mails, faxes, voicemails and now images -- is easily and
transparently accessible."
GroupWise Imaging will offer seamless integration between Novell's
GroupWise 5 Universal Mail Box, Xerox's industry-leading scanning and
imaging technology, and WhetStone's production imaging system. It will
comprise two components: the GroupWise Imaging core, which will be
included as part of the GroupWise 5 Universal Mail Box at no extra
charge; and the GroupWise Imaging Solutions Pack, a set of imaging
enhancement products and capabilities, which will be sold separately for
a nominal fee. GroupWise Imaging will be available after first customer
ship of GroupWise 5.
GroupWise Imaging leverages the powerful document management
features of GroupWise 5 to let users manage and share images the way
they would text documents, E-mails and faxes; this includes the ability to
store images in shared folders and to perform searches on image
profiles or specific annotations within images.
In addition to full image management, GroupWise Imaging supports
Xerox's XIF image format for transmitting high-quality gray-scale and
color document images across a corporate network or intranet via E-mail
without worrying about enormous file sizes. GroupWise Imaging offers
the first-ever integration between desktop imaging and portable
document technology -- leveraging Novell's Envoy (EVY) format --
allowing users to easily share electronic images in a network or intranet
environment. It also supports MAPI (Microsoft Application Programming
Interface), ODMA (Open Document Management API) and ODMAWF
(Open Document Management API for WorkFlow) standards to allow
E-mailed document images to be opened using popular office productivity
suites from Corel, Lotus and Microsoft, regardless of whether the
receiving user has GroupWise Imaging.
"This cooperative effort enables us to provide GroupWise users with an
effective means for capturing, sharing, viewing and editing images in an
enterprise environment," said Michael Tivnan, vice president and general
manager of Xerox DDS software. "Our partnership with Novell and
WhetStone allows us to extend the strength of our PerfectScan
technology beyond the LAN and into the realm of the corporate intranet
by solving the problems of image quality and portability.
"Despite the growing prevalence of electronic mail, paper is still very
much a part of standard business processes, and production imaging
alone hasn't solved the problem. What is needed is an affordable link
between these two essential productivity tools that will not bring down a
user's machine or an entire network," said Randall Waters, president of
WhetStone Technologies. "GroupWise Imaging breaks down the final
barriers between electronic and paper documents, and raises the bar on
what constitutes a full-featured information-sharing environment."
Under the terms of the agreement, WhetStone will provide development
and integration between Novell's GroupWise 5 advanced e-mail system
and Envoy portable document technology, Xerox's new PerfectScan
image processing technology and TextBridge Optical Character
Recognition (OCR) software, and WhetStone's ViewWise image viewer
and production imaging system.
GroupWise Imaging
GroupWise Imaging merges the traditionally separate areas of desktop
and production imaging and electronic publishing into a single
collaborative imaging environment at a desktop price point. It offers a
complete set of features for viewing, editing and sharing images. In
addition to providing seamless interaction with GroupWise's powerful
document management and workflow features, it offers one-button
image processing and enhancement capabilities; full annotation and
document image manipulation support, including the ability to separate the
textual and graphical components of scanned page; fully integrated
portable document and electronic publishing capabilities, including
complete support for most industry-standard scanners and image file
formats. It will also support OLE (Object Linking and Embedding)
automation to enable the creation of images using industry-standard
development tools and the GroupWise Object API.
The GroupWise Imaging Solutions Pack

scanning, editing and conversion features based on Xerox's
PerfectScan technology and tightly integrated with GroupWise 5, will
allow users to perform advanced processing and enhancement of
scanned images.

TextBridge OCR software and WhetStone's production imaging systems,
